A Project Engineer in a semiconductor manufacturing plant (or Fab)
manages the installation, qualification, and improvement of high-tech production tools, ensuring they meet performance and safety standards. They facilitate cross-functional projects, bridging engineering, construction, and manufacturing teams to maximize yield and minimize tool downtime, often acting as the technical point of contact.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Planning & Scheduling: Develop comprehensive schedules for tool installation, facility hook-ups, and process qualification (PQ), benchmarking progress against deadlines.
- Equipment Installation & Qualification: Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of new semiconductor tools (e.g., lithography, etchers) to meet strict design specs.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with Process, Facilities, Automation, and Production
teams to integrate new tools into the Fab flow.
- Risk & Change Management: Evaluate technical proposals, identify potential scheduling risks, and manage Change Orders (CO) to ensure adherence to standards.
- Data Analysis & Improvement: Use data analytics to monitor equipment performance, troubleshoot issues, and drive continuous process improvements (CPI) for yield enhancement.
- Safety Compliance: Ensure all installation activities comply with safety regulations (e.g., SEMI S2/S8) and rigorous cleanroom protocols.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Materials Science ).
- Experience: 3-5+ years of experience in project management or engineering, preferably in semiconductor fabrication or high-tech manufacturing.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of vacuum systems, robotics, CAD tools, and Statistical Process Control (SPC).
- Software: Proficiency with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Siemens Teamcenter) and data analysis tools (e.g., Excel).
- Soft Skills: Strong communication, problem-solving under pressure, and leadership abilities.
- Experience with cleanroom environments.
- Background in Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
- Familiarity with facility construction and utility hook-up.
