Job Overview:
The Construction Estimator is someone who can identify potential projects to bid on and estimate. This position requires preparing estimates, conducting take-offs, cost management and gathering proposals from subcontractors.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Bidding platform Bluebeam.
- Prepare estimates on new projects in relation to underground wet utilities processing and fabrication.
- Read and interpret job bid instructions and detailed specifications for preparation of estimates.
- Prepare take-off of materials and estimate all necessary labor, materials, buyout items, and equipment costs as part of the estimate.
- Develop and maintain customer relationships and build customer relationships.
- Mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills, as well as knowledge of structural steel materials and construction technique
- Build and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing.
- Solicit bids and negotiate contracts with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Research and gather information: Review the scope-of-work document, building plans, and specifications. Visit construction sites to learn more about the project.
- Calculate costs: Estimate the cost of materials, labor, and equipment. Obtain quotes from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Create proposals: Write proposals, budgets, and cost estimates for clients and project managers.
- Collaborate with others: Work with project managers, contractors, engineers, and suppliers to prepare estimates.
- Negotiate: Negotiate with suppliers to get the best prices.
- Follow up: Follow up with clients on submitted proposals and budgets.
- Review estimates: Review software-generated estimates for accuracy and quality.
- Submit Change Orders and follow up with General Contractor
Ideal Candidate will Possess:
- Extensive Wet Utility Experience: A minimum of 2 years of direct experience estimating projects involving water, sewer, storm drain systems, and ideally, pump stations and treatment facilities. This includes a deep understanding of underground construction methods, materials, and relevant local/state regulations in California.
- Strong Project Management Acumen: While not a Chief Estimator, this role often requires an ability to manage the estimation process from inception to completion, ensuring a seamless transition of winning bids to operations.
- Proficiency in Estimating Software: Expertise in industry-standard software like HCSS HeavyBid, B2W Estimate, Bluebeam, and strong Excel skills are non-negotiable for accurate take-offs and cost breakdowns.
- Strong Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to analyze complex plans and specifications, identify potential risks, and develop value-engineered solutions is vital.
- Effective Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary for collaborating with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients.
- Understanding of California-Specifics: Knowledge of California water district standards, soils reports, and specific regional challenges for underground utility construction in metropolitan areas will set a candidate apart.

· Have fast, accurate data entry skills.
· Use word processing, spreadsheet, database and email software.
· Strong negotiation skills to secure favorable terms with suppliers and subcontractors.

Average Annual Salary: Approximately $62,400 - $72,800
