Construction Engineer - Civil Infrastructure - Worcester to Boston

Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Construction Engineer to support civil construction and infrastructure projects. The Construction Engineer will provide technical guidance, construction oversight, and coordination between design teams, contractors, owners, and municipalities to ensure projects are built safely, on schedule, and according to plans, standards, and specifications. This role requires field presence, strong engineering judgment, and experience with infrastructure systems including drainage, sewer, roadways, bridges, and utilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site engineering support and technical direction during construction to ensure work conforms to design plans, project specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, owners, and municipal agencies to resolve design and construction issues and maintain project progress.
  • Perform inspections and quality assurance testing for earthwork, pavement, drainage, sewer, utility installations, retaining walls, and structural elements.
  • Develop, maintain, and update project schedules using Critical Path Method (CPM); experience with Primavera P6 or MS Project to track activities, milestones, and critical delays.
  • Plan, review and implement traffic control measures, interstate and ramp closure strategies, detours, and on-ramp/off-ramp operations in coordination with traffic engineers and permitting authorities.
  • Review construction submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs; verify compliance with specifications and design plans.
  • Prepare daily and weekly field reports, progress documentation, and change order support; maintain records in Procore or equivalent construction management platforms.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to clarify plans, propose constructible solutions, and support design revisions as needed.
  • Manage utility coordination, permitting, and scheduling for municipal connections and relocations.
  • Oversee inspection and testing of structural elements including bridges and retaining walls; coordinate specialty inspections such as welding or geotechnical observations.
  • Ensure adherence to safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements; participate in pre-construction and site safety meetings.
  • Support bid review, constructability reviews, and preconstruction planning activities; assist with cost tracking and claims avoidance strategies.

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering (or closely related field).
  • EIT or PE license a plus.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in heavy civil or infrastructure construction (roads, bridges, utilities, sewer/drainage).
  • Demonstrated field experience with construction inspection, earthwork, retaining walls, and structural components.
  • Strong knowledge of construction standards, specifications, design plans, and industry best practices.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, shop drawings, and construction specifications.
  • Experience developing and managing project schedules using Critical Path Method; familiarity with Primavera P6 and/or MS Project .
  • Proficient with construction management software (Procore )
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD is a plus not required.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills with contractors, public agencies, and municipal stakeholders.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to work outdoors in a construction environment.
  • Typical schedule is Monday through Friday - with 50/50 split time in field and office. 
  • Hybrid flexibility allows for you to work from home on days you are not in the field.
