Job Description
Commissioning Engineer – Defence Sector\n\nWe are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to support and deliver complex commissioning activities within the defence sector. This role ensures commissioning activities meet all applicable legal requirements, technical specifications, and applied standards, while providing commissionability input throughout concept, detailed design, and construction phases.\n\nThis is an appointed role under internal governance procedures and requires formal appointment as a Risk Assessor.\n\nThe Role\n\nAs Commissioning Engineer, you will support the development and delivery of the commissioning strategy and act as a key interface between engineering teams and sub-contractors. You will ensure commissioning activities are delivered safely, compliantly, and to the required technical and quality standards in a highly regulated environment.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nSupport the development and implementation of the Commissioning Strategy.\n\nAct as a focal point for internal teams and sub-contractors during commissioning activities.\n\nEnsure commissioning works are planned, risk assessed, and managed in line with company and regulatory requirements.\n\nContribute to maintaining high standards of health, safety, wellbeing, and .\n\nAssist in organising resources to deliver the contracted commissioning scope.\n\nOversee and execute commissioning activities to ensure delivery right first time.\n\nPrepare and review Safe Systems of Work (Risk Assessments, Method Statements, etc.).\n\nMonitor and coordinate sub-contractors where applicable.\n\nReview training and competency records to ensure personnel are suitably qualified.\n\nProvide reports and performance data relating to Safety, Quality, Time, and Cost.\n\nCarry out workplace inspections and ensure compliance with procedures and standards.\n\nReport incidents and unplanned events in line with company processes.\n\nExperience & Qualifications\n\nMinimum Academic Requirements:\n\nNVQ Level 4 / HNC / HND / SVQ Level 3 (with relevant experience)\n or\n\nVocational Qualification Level 6 / Bachelor’s Degree / SVQ Level 4\n\nMembership of an appropriate Engineering Institution\n\nEssential Certification:\n\nIOSH Managing Safely\n\nExperience Required:\n\nDemonstrable experience delivering commissioning activities within a highly regulated environment (defence or similar sectors such as nuclear).\n\nStrong understanding of safety governance, risk assessment, and quality standards.\n\nExperience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and subcontractors.\n\nBehaviours\n\nAligned with a Mid-Level Leadership capability framework:\n\nLeading Self: Demonstrates strong personal accountability and promotes a positive safety culture.\n\nLeading Others: Supports team performance through effective communication and collaboration.\n\nLeading Resources: Plans and organises activities to meet commissioning milestones.\n\nAdditional Information\n\nAppointment under internal governance procedure IO-PRD-006.\n\nFormal appointment as a Risk Assessor required.\n\nTravel may be required to fulfil the responsibilities of the role.\n\nIf you are a commissioning professional seeking to contribute to critical defence programmes in a highly regulated environment, we encourage you to apply
