Lead Designer
Generally responsible for supervision and technical direction over a team of designers when functioning as a lead designer. As lead designer, responsibilities will include total delivery of the civil/structural deliverables and services on time, within performance budget and meeting quality expectations. Duties may include performing advanced design work serving as a technical specialist for a complex design assignment. This level requires extensive progressive experience in civil/structural design and involves utilization of project controls for cost, schedule and quality of projects. This work will be performed under minimal supervision.
Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Familiarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards
Recognizing and communicating project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
Reviewing and comprehending the latest information available regarding civil/structural calculations, equipment drawings and layouts or drawings from other disciplines before initiating design effort on specific drawings.
Drafting civil/structural plans under minimal supervision.
Knowledge of basic civil material specifications to the extent that all information required for material purchase, fabrication and construction is reflected on the finished drawings.
Recognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly.
Performing field related work collecting design information and verifying designs for tie-ins, function and clearances to existing facility; on-site assistance during startup; performing field support activities, where assigned, for engineering support during construction; assisting engineers with cost and material estimates and preliminary design studies.
Checking the accuracy and quality of drawings developed by drafters, when assigned, based on information conveyed by engineering direction, equipment and discipline drawings; providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel in the department.
Coordinating & delegating work activities with other teammates and the discipline leads.
Producing civil/structural construction scopes with engineering review and approval; able to serve in role as a mentor for entry level and new teammates.
Completing complex and difficult designs and layouts for complete systems and components of projects. Assignments typically involve design elements for which there may be no clearly established precedents and require anticipation of problems at the outset in order to provide appropriate solutions.
Performing front-end layout and design of complex systems and equipment.
Ensuring compliance with required specifications, tolerances, safety factors, and client requirements.
Performing specialized geometric design computations and analysis.
Performing interdisciplinary checks and providing coordination of data to ensure compatible designs.
Assisting in the establishment or revision of guidelines and standards.
Reviewing supplier data and supplier/manufacturer drawings, as required.
Checking orthographic (2D) and isometric (3D) drawings prepared by others. May provide direction to a team of checking personnel, ensuring the dimensional accuracy of the drawings produced.
Collaborating with Engineers and other engineering disciplines to ensure quality of design.
Providing training to less experienced designers.
Serving as Lead Designer on projects, ensuring compliance with industry codes, as well as project and company standards.
Preparing man-hour estimates as required.
Responsible for the quality and economy of deliverables, and efficiency of detailing.
As a lead designer, responsible for the design team meeting scope, schedule and budget.
