SUMMARY:
The Civil Heavy Equipment Operator position will be responsible for operating heavy equipment/machinery for construction, demolition, or excavation projects. Heavy Equipment Operators are highly skilled individuals that operate and maintain various types of construction equipment; including, but not limited to excavators, loaders, backhoes, bull dozers, graders, etc. Heavy Equipment Operator duties include digging trenches and maneuvering shoring for pipe crews, to install or repair sanitary sewer, storm drain, or water lines, etc. A working knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in sanitary sewer, storm drain, and water construction work is essential.
Our search is currently limited to qualified candidates living within the Hampton Roads commuting area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must be able to operate a variety of equipment including but not limited to, backhoes, excavators, loaders, skid steers.
- Operate equipment proficiently in a safe and efficient manner, while producing high quality work and meeting production goals.
- Confirm utilities and other buried lines or structures are located prior to digging.
- Must be able to maintain grade with the assistance of others using lasers, levels, transits, string lines, or other methods.
- Maintain legal excavations per OSHA and other associated Federal and State agency regulations.
- Inspect equipment and general work area prior to the start of any job, including completing all required paperwork.
- Perform routine inspection of equipment.
- Load trucks with materials, rock, and dirt with various types of equipment.
- Understanding of soil types and how they affect the work being performed and the hazards they present.
- Actively aware of surroundings near the equipment to maintain safe operation and distances from potential hazards such as underground utility lines, overhead utility lines, other equipment, and other workers.
- Maintain the flow of work under minimal supervision.
- Ensure the equipment is safely and securely stored.
- Assist the ground crew in other activities if your specific job skills are not needed that day.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.
- Must reside within commuting distance of our main office in Virginia Beach, VA.
- This is an in-person, on-site position.
- NEED TO BE ABLE TO OBTAIN BASE ACCESS FOR ONGOING PROJECTS!
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in construction is .
- Minimum of 3 years experience operating excavator to complete grading, water, sewer and storm drain activities.
- Experience and knowledge of construction means and methods and understanding of the utility industry trades, installation, maintenance, and practices specifically underground utilities such as water, sewage, and drainage systems.
- Strong knowledge regarding the operation, safety, and maintenance of equipment being used.
- Knowledge of positioning, joining, and aligning lines at proper depths, angles, and grades.
- Knowledge of Construction Safety Regulations and Best Practices.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as construction specifications, blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Must have a valid Drivers License and any other required licenses/certifications for operation of Heavy Equipment.

- This position involves work at a construction site where duties will be performed outdoors, in differing weather elements.
- Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate business machines.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk.
- Climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time.
- Agility to navigate construction sites and uneven terrain.
SALARY:
- Negotiable depending on experience.
- Paid Weekly on Fridays (Mon thru Sun Work Week) w/ paystubs emailed.
