Job Description

The Building Services Supervisor is a frontline leader responsible for guiding and supporting a team of custodians in maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming campus facilities. This role promotes employee engagement, ensures high-quality service delivery, and builds strong relationships with campus partners to support the University’s mission.

The Supervisor is accountable for planning, scheduling, and monitoring daily custodial operations; ensuring staff are trained, equipped, and supported; and fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure High-Quality Cleaning Standards 

  • Provide on-the-job training in cleaning techniques, safety practices, and service expectations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities and storage areas to verify compliance with quality and safety standards.
  • Partner with building managers, rectors, deans, and department leaders to confirm customer satisfaction and resolve issues.
  • Use quality assurance tools to evaluate results and drive accountability among team members.

Administrative Leadership

  • Plan, schedule, and assign daily work, including weekend and special project coverage.
  • Monitor attendance, approve time off, and manage overtime to align with budgetary goals.
  • Lead staff within a performance management system: provide feedback, conduct performance reviews, and initiate corrective action when needed.
  • Oversee equipment and supply inventories, ensure proper maintenance, and coordinate repairs.
  • Manage project work and corrective maintenance requests using AiM software.

Supervision & Team Development

  • Lead and supervise custodians and crew leaders to accomplish departmental goals.
  • Develop and adjust job assignments to optimize resources.
  • Recruit, interview, and recommend new hires.
  • Encourage teamwork and problem-solving, responding to customer needs in a timely and professional manner.
  • Investigate safety incidents, complete reports, and implement corrective measures.
  • Serve as acting supervisor for other custodial teams as needed.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and service quality across campus.

Projects & Special Assignments 

  • Provide weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage as required.
  • Keep leadership informed of operational issues and recommend solutions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support Building Services and University priorities.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • Minimum 3–4 years of custodial, facilities, or supervisory experience.

Skills & Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong communication skills in English (written and spoken).
  • Intermediate computer skills, including work order and scheduling systems.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team, resolve conflicts, and build a positive work environment.
