Overview
Energy Jobline is supporting a major international energy infrastructure programme and is seeking an experienced Bare Pipe (Mill) Inspector to oversee quality assurance activities during line pipe manufacturing at steel production facilities.
The role will ensure that pipe manufacturing processes comply with project specifications, international standards, and quality requirements for oil and gas pipeline infrastructure.
The Role
Reporting to the Project QA/QC Manager or Procurement & Expediting Coordinator, the Bare Pipe (Mill) Inspector will monitor pipe production activities at the mill to ensure the integrity and quality of manufactured pipeline materials.
The position will focus on surveillance of manufacturing processes, dimensional inspection, testing verification, and certification control prior to pipe release for coating or shipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor pipe manufacturing processes including plate or coil forming, welding, and heat treatment operations
- Ensure full traceability of heat numbers and materials throughout the pipe production process
- Verify welding parameters and forming processes comply with approved procedures
- Perform dimensional and visual inspections including pipe end bevel geometry, ovality, length, and straightness
- Inspect pipe surfaces to identify defects such as laminations, mechanical damage, or surface imperfections
- Witness and verify automatic ultrasonic testing (Auto-UT) of pipe weld seams and pipe body areas
- Witness hydrostatic pressure testing to confirm pipe integrity and compliance with applicable standards
- Review radiographic testing results where required for weld seam verification
- Review and validate Mill Test Certificates and associated quality documentation
- Issue release documentation for pipes approved for transfer to coating facilities
- Maintain inspection records, daily reports, and raise non-conformance reports when deviations occur
Skills & Experience
- Strong knowledge of pipeline manufacturing standards including API 5L and ISO 3183
- Understanding of welding inspection and NDT techniques used in pipe manufacturing
- Familiarity with metallurgical properties of pipeline steels and quality control processes
- Experience using precision inspection tools such as pi-tapes, gauges, and calipers
- Ability to review technical documentation, mill certificates, and quality records
- Strong reporting and documentation skills within manufacturing or inspection environments
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering
- Mandatory certification as CSWIP 3.1 or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
- ASNT Level II certification in UT, MT, and PT, with Radiographic Interpretation certification preferred
- Minimum 8 years’ experience within the oil & gas sector
- At least 5 years’ experience in pipe mill inspection or manufacturing surveillance
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills

The advertised day rate applies to independent consultants operating on a contract basis. Candidates who prefer to be engaged as employees of the client may be offered a different remuneration structure.
