Preston Auto Group is seeking an experienced, highly skilled Diagnostic Technician to join our dynamic and growing team. As a key member of our service department, you’ll play a crucial role in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing vehicles across all makes and models — with precision, speed, and integrity.

You’ll be working in our recently renovated, state-of-the-art service facility, designed with both efficiency and comfort in mind. From advanced diagnostic software to factory-level scan tools, and a fully climate-controlled shop, everything is in place to help you perform at your best.

Requirements:

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • ASE Certification(s) required or in progress (Master Technician )
  • Manufacturer-specific training and/or certifications a strong plus
  • Completion of an accredited automotive technology program is

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in automotive diagnostics and repair
  • Proven track record diagnosing and repairing a wide range of makes and models
  • Strong background in electrical systems, drivability diagnostics, emissions systems, and onboard computer systems
  • Experience using OEM and aftermarket scan tools
  • Prior work in a dealership or high-volume independent repair facility

Technical Skills:

  • Expert in reading and interpreting diagnostic codes, wiring diagrams, and repair manuals
  • Proficiency with oscilloscopes, multimeters, lab scopes, and other advanced diagnostic tools
  • Capable of performing module programming, coding, and software updates
  • Comfortable navigating digital inspection systems and dealership service software (e.g., CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, Mitchell1, etc.)

Mechanical & Shop Knowledge:

  • In-depth understanding of all major vehicle systems including:
    • Engine & transmission
    • Brake & suspension
    • HVAC & climate control

  • Ability to perform comprehensive vehicle inspections and prioritize safety-critical repairs
  • Knowledge of TPMS, ADAS calibration, and emissions compliance procedures is a plus

  • Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills – able to clearly explain technical issues to advisors or other technicians
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Team player willing to support and mentor junior technicians
  • Committed to continuous learning and staying current with automotive technology advancements
  • Professional demeanor and high standard of workmanship
  • Dependable, punctual, and organized with a strong work ethic

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening
  • Must have a complete and up-to-date set of personal tools
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Duties are performed on the dealership premises, both indoors and outdoors and on customer test drives. Work includes frequent movement around the company facilities and the outdoor car lot to interact with customers and other departments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear and is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. The position requires regular and predictable attendance. Scheduled shifts will include evening hours, weekends, and holidays.
