Automation Technician – Electrical Control Systems
A long-established engineering and manufacturing company based in Essex is seeking to appoint an automation technician to join its specialist electrical and automation department. Operating from a modern design and production facility, the business designs and assembles complete filling and packaging lines, with a strong focus on pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.
This role offers a dynamic and varied workload, working on highly engineered systems that combine automation, electrical design, PLC programming, and mechanical integration. You will be involved from design through to commissioning, both in-house and on customer sites around the world.
Key responsibilities
Design and specification of PLC-based control systems from customer or internal design briefs
Programming of PLCs, HMIs, and safety relays, including configuration of I/O and drive systems
Build and test of control panels in collaboration with internal panel builders and electricians
Integration of ancillary equipment such as vision systems, servo motors, inverters, and SCADA systems
Electrical fault-finding across PLC and hardwired systems
Support and commissioning of machinery both at the Essex facility and at international customer sites
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including assembly, documentation, and serviceEssential requirements
Formal electrical engineering qualification (e.g. apprenticeship or equivalent)
Strong understanding of electrical drawings, panel design, and wiring
Experience with PLC programming, HMI configuration, and automated controls
Knowledge of servo motor and inverter drive systems
Willingness to travel for commissioning and service support worldwide
Comfortable working across both workshop and live production environmentsDesirable experience
Exposure to pharmaceutical manufacturing or hazardous area regulations (e.g. ATEX)
Familiarity with vision systems, safety systems, and SCADA integrationWhat’s on offer
