Controls Technician

A manufacturing company in Waukegan, IL is looking for a hands-on Controls Technician with proven, testable experience in PLC programming, troubleshooting industrial automation systems, and working with 480V 3-phase electrical systems. This is not a desk job—we need a boots-on-the-ground technician who can navigate production floors, diagnose problems in real time, and deliver practical automation solutions.

Responsibilities of the Controls Technician

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance automation and control systems to ensure optimal performance of production and packaging lines.

  • Program, configure, and modify Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMIs; ensure seamless system integration with machinery and plant infrastructure.

  • Diagnose electrical and control system failures using schematics, manuals, and software tools.

  • Collaborate with maintenance, engineering, and production teams to resolve technical issues and implement automation improvements.

  • Understand and safely work with 480V 3-phase power systems and industrial motor controls.

  • Execute and improve preventive maintenance procedures for all automation and instrumentation systems.

  • Document all activities, including system modifications, repairs, calibrations, and performance reviews.

Requirements of the Controls Technician

  • 5+ years of direct experience in an automation or controls role within a manufacturing environment.

  • Proven expertise in Allen-Bradley PLC programming (Ladder Logic), troubleshooting, and controls integration.

  • Strong knowledge of automation systems, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, actuators, and instrumentation.

  • Hands-on experience working with 480V 3-phase electrical systems and control panels.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation.

  • Experience supporting high-speed packaging lines and continuous production systems.

  • Familiar with preventive maintenance systems, including use of CMMS.

1st shift, DIRECT HIRE

Pay is $40.00 - $45.00 an hour, based on experience
