Automation Engineer in Washington

This role is a CONTRACT-TO HIRE position.

 

 

Responsible for completing automation and controls efforts across multiple projects, from initial design through commissioning.

 

This role combines PLC/HMI programming, system design, project coordination, and field support.

 

Core Responsibilities

 

Project Leadership

  • Develop automation scope across multiple concurrent projects
  • Serve as primary controls contact for internal teams and customers
  • Interpret P&IDs, specifications, and cause & effect documents
  • Coordinate with panel shop, design, fabrication, and field teams

PLC & HMI Development

  • Program PLCs (AB, Emerson, and Various Other Systems)
  • Develop HMIs (Redlion and Various Systems)
  • Implement control sequences, interlocks, alarms, and analog control
  • Build reusable logic (AOIs, scaling structures, modular routines)
  • Integrate devices via Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, and serial comms

System Design

  • Understand control narratives and functional descriptions
  • Design lead/lag systems (compressors, pumps)
  • Define I/O requirements and support electrical design reviews

Commissioning & Support

  • Perform system startup and commissioning
  • Troubleshoot PLC logic, networks, instrumentation, and drives
  • Support FAT and SAT activities
  • Verify system performance against design intent

 

Panel Shop

  • Review panel designs and BOMs for functionality and compliance
  • Coordinate between automation and panel build teams

Documentation

  • Develop and maintain I/O lists, alarm lists, and control narratives
  • Create standardized templates for repeatable systems
  • Provide clear documentation for handoff and future support

Business Support & Improvement

  • Assist with estimating automation scope for proposals
  • Identify opportunities for system standardization
  • Support training of team members
  • Interface with vendors and evaluate technologies

 

Typical Systems

  • Instrument air compressor systems (lead/lag control, monitoring)
  • Water transfer and truck loading facilities
  • Thermal monitoring systems (FLIR-based)
  • Packaged industrial control panels and systems

 

Key Tools & Platforms

  • Rockwell Automation (Studio 5000, CompactLogix)
  • Red Lion HMI (Crimson 3.x)
  • Emerson FB3000
  • Industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Hirschmann switches)
  • VFD integration (analog speed control, feedback monitoring)
