Automation Engineer – Shelby Township, MI
We are seeking a highly skilled Automation Engineer for a full-time, hands-on position at a manufacturing facility in Shelby Township, MI. This role plays a vital part in maintaining the efficiency and uptime of automation cells, directly impacting first-time quality (FTQ), throughput, and overall customer satisfaction.
Primary Responsibilities:

Perform preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and troubleshooting on automation systems and assembly work cells.

Execute and improve automation programming, with a focus on optimizing robotic systems and vision systems.

Provide technical support and training to operations and maintenance teams, enabling them to respond effectively to micro stoppages and reduce unplanned downtime.

Maintain and ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and manufacturer specifications for all equipment.

Collaborate with off-shift team members to increase equipment readiness and operational autonomy.

Support and lead continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.
Technical Expertise:
Candidates must be highly experienced with:

FANUC robots
-
Mitsubishi Industrial MELFA robots
-
Keyence vision systems
-
PLC programming
-
Electrical and mechanical systems
-
Automation troubleshooting and diagnostics
Project Responsibilities:
-
Assist in identifying and evaluating automation and manufacturing equipment suppliers.

Develop and maintain equipment standards, including design, components, controls, signals, and documentation.

Support development engineering during RFQ (request for quote) processes for new projects.
-
Gather equipment pricing and create Scope of Work (SOW) documentation.
-
Coordinate with plant and engineering teams to manage automation equipment projects through commissioning.
-
Ensure proper startup, approval, documentation, and training for all new automation installations.
Qualifications:
-
5+ years of automation experience in a manufacturing environment
-
2-4 years of formal technical training
-
7-8 years of technical automation and programming experience strongly
-
Proven experience training and mentoring maintenance technicians and operators
-
Bachelor’s degree
-
Availability for off-shift support
-
Willingness to support other locations as needed
