Job Overview
We're hiring a Automation Engineer to join Stouffer Legal in Towson, Maryland. This is a full-time, in-person role (Mon–Fri, 8:30 am–5:30 pm). Pay range is $70,000 to $90,000, based on experience.
Your first project will be hands-on: draft estate-planning documents with our attorneys while building the automation engine that will eventually handle this work. This foundational project launches our broader internal software platform that will scale across departments and integrate AI.
Our technology stack includes Node JS, Vue, AngularJS, AWS Lambda, MongoDB, AWS DynamoDB, C# for windows applications, serverless infrastructure primarily all hosted within AWS. Our AI pipelines are vendor agnostic, and we currently use mostly OpenAI, Claude and AWS Bedrock for smaller triaging models.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Build the Legal Drafting Engine (LDE) by pairing with attorneys to map and automate live document workflows.
- Plan and lead sprints with clear priorities tied to business goals.
- Automate business processes and workflows with serverless software and large--model tools.
- Document systems, user stories, and best practices.
- Review code, mentor junior developers, and contribute to hiring.
- Analyze performance metrics to inform development priorities.
Technical Responsibilities
- Design scalable data structures and document templates.
- Create automated testing and monitoring systems.
- Refactor and optimize legacy codebases.
- Participate in architecture discussions and technical planning.
- Ensure projects follow modern security and documentation standards.
Project and Collaboration
- Interview legal staff to gather requirements.
- Perform various job duties of other roles to more rapidly understand the business process for which you will be developing a solution for.
- Translate business needs into user stories.
- Present demos and product updates to stakeholders.
- Propose and implement workflow improvements.
First 90 Days
0–30 Days
- Learn company systems and tools.
- Shadow attorneys or paralegals as they draft real documents.
- Create data models and decision trees for legal automation.
- Observe cross-functional team dynamics.
- Demonstrate proficiency at legal drafting.
31–60 Days
- Deliver the first round of automated templates.
- Host feedback sessions with legal staff.
- Introduce reusable clause libraries and logic layers.
- Set up pipelines and testing tools.
- Document best practices and repeatable workflows.
61–90 Days
- Reach 80% automation for standard packages.
- Publish internal onboarding and design guides.
- Propose automation roadmap for other departments.
- Demonstrate ability to independently lead a full-cycle project.
Example Projects
- Launch the MVP of the Legal Drafting Engine UI and functionality improvements.
- Help design and develop a mechanism to safely incorporate LLMs into specific template elements within a document.
- Audit and improve legacy code.
- Streamline other aspects of our businesses such as estate administration filings, accounting and tax processes.
- Build internal monitoring dashboards.
