The Automation & Controls Engineer serves as the lead local resource for automation and controls systems supporting manufacturing equipment. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of automation technologies used in the production of energy storage solutions. Working closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Maintenance, Production, Quality, vendors, and global engineering teams, this position drives system performance, standardization, and continuous improvement across the facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, development, commissioning, and performance optimization of automation and controls systems supporting BESS production.
- Serve as the local subject matter expert (SME) for automation and controls technologies, ensuring production lines operate safely and efficiently.
- Provide on-site technical support and troubleshooting for PLCs, robotics, vision systems, and related controls equipment.
- Develop and lead FMEA and risk assessments to prioritize process and equipment improvements.
- Mentor and support team members in PLC programming, robotic programming, vision system analysis, and other controls technologies.
- Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and regulations, including ISO, ANSI, and RIA.
- Develop, maintain, and control automation documentation such as control system specifications, wiring diagrams, and operating procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of control system configurations, revisions, and change history.
- Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to specify, select, and procure automation and controls components.
- Support the creation, maintenance, and enforcement of North American Controls Standards.
- Coordinate with overseas headquarters and cross-functional teams on future projects too optimize and drive continuous improvement.
- Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT) for automation and controls systems.
- Support system integrations including SCADA, MES, QMS, WMS, EAM, TPM, and EMS platforms.
- Travel up to 30% as required to support projects and system implementations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Controls Systems Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 3–5 years of experience working in automation and controls within a manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with PLC systems (preferably Siemens), SCADA systems, and HMI interfaces.
- Experience in the battery industry or similar industries such as power , high-volume/low-mix automotive, or medical manufacturing.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency in reading and creating electrical schematics and control wiring diagrams.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Electrical, Controls, or Manufacturing Engineering.
- Six Sigma certification.
- Experience working with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Experience in lithium battery manufacturing or electrical component manufacturing.
- Ability to speak Mandarin.
