The Engineering Department Management Trainee is an entry-level supervisory position responsible for obtaining experience in the role the respective department plays in Conrail's daily operations and strategic planning. The position will be assigned a supervisory responsibility and daily accountabilities within the department to fulfill. As experience grows, the incumbent is expected to study, recommend and implement changes to improve the efficiency and productivity of the work force and department processes. Practice Safety through training and execution of assigned work duties, develop a thorough understanding of Conrail's safety program, and ensure employees' compliance with Conrail safety and operating rules and FRA regulations. It is expected this position will seek out and exploit all opportunities to improve knowledge of safety theory and practice as it applies to a railroad. Position will include exposure to daily operations in serving Conrail's customers. Progressively supervise, coach, train, and delegating work activities to subordinates.
Develop skills to mentor less experienced subordinates.
Set example for fellow Conrail employees of safe work practices, rules knowledge and commitment to fulfilling service commitments.
Managing Efficiently and participate in the local budgeting process and execute daily plan in conformance. Managing Unusual Occurrences and Participate in preliminary investigation and management of unusual occurrences per Company requirements and communicate within Transportation Department to mitigate. Complete required administrative reports and documentation, maintaining files, conducting routine communications with others. Supervision/Staff Development IN conjunction with Director Mechanical Operations and Director Motive Power, create and execute individual training and development plan in all facets of field operations and headquarters functions as they relate to mechanical operations.
Qualifications Physical Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree is desired but not required.
· Ability to interact with all employee levels and work as part of team.
· Demonstrated 'self-starting' attitude toward learning and leadership.
· Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal & written) skills.
· Demonstrated problem solving skills and customer focus.
· Read, write, speak and understand the English .
· Experience desired using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access.
· Report to work on a regular and consistent basis.
· Work outside normal tour, weekends/holidays, as required.
· Work outdoors in all types of weather.
· Walk frequently; bend, stoop, and crawl occasionally to inspect equipment or structures.
· Walk on uneven surfaces.
· Climb equipment ladders and steps.
· Use various types of large hand tools.
· Lift up to 30 pounds.
· Travel to different locations.
· Wear protective equipment and clothing – hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.
