Wind energy projects have been developed recently across Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. Of the 36 wind projects, 23 include significant ownership from Aboriginal Peoples, Municipal Corporations or local farmers.

The Canadian Wind Energy Association has proposed a future strategy for wind energy to reach a capacity of 55,000 MW by 2025, meeting 20% of the country’s energy needs. The plan, Wind Vision 2025, could potentially generate over 50,000 jobs and represent approximately CDN$165 million in annual revenue. If this was to be achieved, the target would make Canada a prominent nation in the wind power sector and would create around CDN$79 billion of investment. It would also save the equivalent of 17 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

In May of 2015, Canada surpassed the 10,000 MW threshold, placing it seventh in the world for installed capacity which is the equivalent power to meet the needs of over three million Canadian homes.
