Openwork is proud to partner with Harris County in the search for a Wastewater Field Technician for an essential short-term role based in Southeast Houston. This is a hands-on opportunity to support critical public health and environmental systems while gaining valuable field experience in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
You’ll be responsible for collecting and delivering wastewater samples, maintaining detailed documentation, and supporting the operations of municipal treatment facilities. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in the field, values accuracy, and understands the importance of environmental stewardship.
Key Responsibilities

  • Schedule and coordinate sample pick-ups to ensure timely delivery to the laboratory.
  • Travel to wastewater treatment facilities to collect samples following established protocols.
  • Accurately document collection details, including dates and initials, on sample bottles.
  • Verify and record sample deliveries to the appropriate laboratory.
  • Complete chain-of-custody documentation and obtain required signatures to maintain accountability.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public health, environmental sciences, microbiology, engineering, or a related field.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Familiarity with wastewater treatment facilities and municipal utility districts is .
  • Experience with sample collection techniques is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS or QGIS) is .
  • Strong attendance and punctuality record.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift up to 150 lbs.
  • Ability to drive for long periods of time.
  • Frequent bending, standing, and walking.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions, including rain and extreme temperatures.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly Pay: $26.00/hour (Based on experience)
  • Schedule: Full-time
