Job DescriptionJob DescriptionDescription:

Job Summary

Salvo Technologies (Zaffiri Precision) is a fast-growing precision firearm CNC manufacturer serving industries that demand uncompromising accuracy and reliability. We combine advanced machining and manufacturing technology with a commitment to innovation, quality, and teamwork.

We are seeking a highly skilled Product Design Engineer Lead who blends creative industrial design with deep mechanical engineering and manufacturing knowledge. This leader will drive new firearm concepts and accessories from initial sketches through production — balancing ergonomics, aesthetics, safety, functionality, and manufacturability to deliver industry-leading products. You will help shape the product roadmap, mentor product designers, and establish scalable design and engineering practices across the company.

Position Overview

This is a hands-on leadership role for a technical designer/engineer who is equally comfortable sketching form and driving tolerance analyses. The Product Design Engineer Lead will own product design execution, DFM/DFA, prototype cycles, testing, and the transfer of designs into production while coordinating closely with CNC programmers, machinists, QA, Product Development, and Management. The role requires strong judgment around firearm safety, regulatory compliance, and end-user ergonomics.

Key Responsibilities

· Lead design and development of new firearms, components, and accessories (receivers, slides, frames, triggers, optics mounts, etc.) from concept through production release.

· Create and refine 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and assemblies using SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar tools.

· Apply industrial design and human factors/ergonomics principles to optimize handling, balance, and user experience.

· Perform tolerance analyses, tolerance stack-ups, and engineering calculations to ensure performance and manufacturability.

· Drive DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) efforts to minimize cost and cycle time while maintaining high quality.

· Collaborate daily with CNC programmers, machinists, and production staff to optimize parts for machining and finishing processes.

· Oversee prototype fabrication and iterative testing (bench, field, and durability testing); analyze results and execute design iterations.

· Evaluate and select materials, coatings, and surface finishes—working with R&D and Quality to ensure strength, durability, and corrosion resistance.

· Ensure designs comply with ATF regulations, SAAMI specifications, ITAR/other export controls, and applicable international standards where required.

· Produce and maintain all technical documentation: drawings, BOMs, change orders, test reports, and revision control.

· Serve as primary technical liaison between design, production, quality, sales, and customers for product-related technical inquiries and part qualification.

· Mentor and lead junior engineers, designers, and technicians; establish and enforce design standards, review processes, and engineering workflows.

· Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities across product design, prototyping, and production processes.

· Stay current with trends in materials science, manufacturing technologies (additive, coatings, composites), and firearms design best practices.

· Support supplier selection and qualification for specialty processes and components when required.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Industrial Design, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.

· Hands-on experience with modern CNC machinery including programming, setup, and operation.

· 5+ years of product design experience in firearms, defense, precision machining, or high-precision mechanical products — experience across both industrial design and mechanical engineering is strongly .

· Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks ; Fusion 360 acceptable).

· Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and tight-tolerance machining practices.

· Practical knowledge of machining, injection molding, casting, finishing, and other relevant manufacturing processes.

· Demonstrated experience with prototype development, testing, and design validation.

· Understanding ergonomics, recoil dynamics, firearm safety mechanisms, and end-user requirements.

· Excellent mechanical intuition, problem-solving ability, creativity, and attention to detail.

· Strong documentation skills (drawings, BOMs, test reports) and experience with revision control.

· Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, CNC programming, production, and quality.

· Collaborate with design, engineering, quality, and production teams to develop and implement CNC machining strategies.

· Program, set up, and operate CNC machines to produce high-quality components in accordance with design specifications.

· Optimize machining processes through trials, simulations, and tests to identify the most efficient tools, speeds, feeds, and tool paths.

· Create and maintain CNC programs using CAD/CAM software, ensuring accuracy and repeatability.

· Must be legally eligible to work with controlled firearm components and comply with U.S. ITAR and other applicable regulations.

Qualifications

· Direct experience designing tactical or sporting pistols and related components.

· Familiarity with FEA or other simulation tools for strength and dynamic analysis.

· Experience in rapid prototyping: 3D printing, CNC prototyping, polymer additive methods.

· Background in optics, mount systems, or accessory design.

· Hands-on firearm enthusiast with experience and understanding of law enforcement, defense, or competitive shooting needs.

· Prior leadership experience in product development or engineering team management.

· Proficiency in CAD/CAM software such as SolidWorks, Mastercam, or Fusion 360

· In-depth understanding of machining principles, cutting tools, materials, and feeds/speeds optimization.

· Strong ability to accurately interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

· Ability to work in a manufacturing and prototype shop environment and to be present for prototype builds and testing.

· Comfortable handling precision components and assemblies; able to lift up to 35 lbs. when necessary.

· Strong attention to detail and capacity for extended focused work during design review and testing activities.

· Occasional travel for field testing, vendor visits, or customer meetings may be required.
