Position Summary:
The Laboratory Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations of the laboratory. Duties include supervising laboratory staff, performing specimen tests and phlebotomy, sustaining quality control and maintaining up-to-date laboratory procedures. Also responsible for constant communication with the Director of Laboratory Services concerning laboratory needs, activities and recommendations.
Department Specific Qualifications:
- Minimum of an associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is required.
- Equivalent work experience may take the place of education.
- Registered MLT (ASCP) is required.
- Minimum of four (4) years’ experience as Healthcare/Medical – Medical/Clinical Laboratory Technologist is required.
Responsibilities & Expectations:
- Moves throughout the facility, assists in emergency drills and performs the physical requirements needed to deliver services, as assigned.
- Provides direct supervision of laboratory staff and operations at the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services.
- Performs laboratory responsibilities of this position according to hospital and department policy and procedure.
- Works cooperatively with staff, physicians and ancillary departments.

- Day-to-day Laboratory Operations - supervises the day-to-day operations of the laboratory including checking supplies, ordering, maintaining inventory, cleaning, troubleshooting, making re-agents, preventative maintenance and performing calibrations. Delegates accordingly. 10%
- Procedure Manuals - writes and updates procedure manuals as needed and reviews annually to ensure that employees have current information needed to perform tests. 8%
- Quality Control Program - helps maintain a quality control program for all procedures performed and maintains accrediting agency standards. Assures compliance within tolerance limits. 8%
- Quality Test Results & Instrument Functioning - responsible for accurate and thoroughly documented quality control, quality assurance, maintenance and service records to assure quality test results and instrument functioning. 8%
- New Testing Methods & Instrumentation - monitors evaluation on new testing methods and instrumentation before accepting as laboratory procedure to provide quality patient testing. 8%
- Communication with Lab Manager - consults with and keeps the lab manager informed of activities, needs and recommends solutions to problems in assigned areas. 8%
- Policies & Procedures - follows all hospital and departmental policies/procedures and ensures compliance by laboratory staff with established policies and procedures, professional standards and practices and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies. 8%
- Priorities - establishes priorities in consultation with the laboratory manager and/or pathologist. 8%
- Staff Development - encourages professional growth and development of staff. 8%
- Professional Growth - maintains professional growth. 8%
- Laboratory Tests & Phlebotomy - performs tests on specimens as well as on all patients, as assigned. Responsible for accuracy and confidentiality. 8%
- CPSI - knowledge of the CPSI system. 5%

Working Conditions:
- Subject to frequent interruptions and changes in priority of duties throughout the day.
