Position Summary
The HSE Supervisor – North America is responsible for leading the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) function across Swick Drilling’s North American operations. Based in Salt Lake City, UT, and reporting to the Operations Manager, this role ensures regulatory compliance with relevant standards, including MSHA and OSHA, drives continuous improvement, and fosters a proactive safety culture. Key responsibilities include early intervention injury management, incident investigation, and direct oversight of Field HSE Advisors to support safe and efficient drilling operations.
Key Responsibilities:
HSE Leadership & Compliance
• Develop, implement, and maintain HSE policies and procedures aligned with Swick’s global standards and North American regulatory requirements (OSHA, MSHA).
• Write, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), policies, and safety protocols to ensure alignment with current regulations and operational needs.
• Ensure compliance with client-specific HSE expectations and participate in audits and inspections.
• Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and environmental stewardship across all levels of the organization.
• Provide leadership and strategic direction to Field HSE Advisors, ensuring consistent application of safety standards and operational alignment.
• Assist HSE Manager and Operations Manager with strategic projects, preparation of reports, background research and other duties as required.
Field Safety Oversight
• Conduct regular site inspections, internal audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and verify control effectiveness.
• Mentor and support Field HSE Advisors in their daily responsibilities, performance development, and professional growth.
• Coordinate field HSE activities to ensure alignment with company policies and operational goals.
• Facilitate collaboration between field HSE personnel and operations teams to proactively identify and mitigate risks.
• Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to safe systems of work.
Injury Management & Early Intervention
• Liaise directly with the US HR Officer and North America Operations Manager on all injuries to ensure compliance with U.S. laws and regulations while maintaining strict confidentiality of employee information.
• Lead the injury management process, ensuring timely response, accurate reporting, and effective coordination of care.
• Responsible for the day-to-day processes associated with injury management Implement early intervention strategies to minimize injury severity, reduce lost time, and support employee recovery.
• Liaise with medical providers, insurers, and internal stakeholders to manage treatment plans and return-to-work programs.
• Maintain injury records and ensure legislative compliance with OSHA/MSHA reporting requirements.
• Monitor injury trends and implement proactive measures to reduce recurrence.
• Development of safe and sustainable return to work programs.
• Use SOLV to manage all injury cases, ensuring accurate documentation, tracking, and reporting.
Incident Investigation & Corrective Action
• Lead investigations into all incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions using structured root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., ICAM).
• Facilitate incident review meetings and ensure timely reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
• Develop and track corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to closure.
• Maintain an incident database and analyze trends to identify systemic risks and improvement opportunities.
• Provide advice and recommendations around classifications and reportable events.
Training & Workforce Engagement
• Deliver HSE training programs including onboarding, site-specific inductions, and refresher courses tailored to drilling operations.
• Ensure all personnel complete required MSHA 40-hour New Miner Training prior to commencing work at applicable sites.
• Coordinate and track completion of MSHA Annual Refresher Training to maintain compliance with federal mining safety regulations.
• Facilitate toolbox talks, safety meetings, and behavior-based safety initiatives to reinforce safe work practices.
• Engage with employees to promote ownership of safety and encourage proactive reporting of hazards and near-misses.
• Support Field HSE Advisors in delivering site-level training and ensuring consistent messaging across all locations.
Reporting & Analytics
• Monitor and report on HSE performance metrics (e.g., TRIFR, LTIFR, environmental incidents).
• Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for internal leadership and clients.
• Use data analytics to identify trends and recommend strategic improvements.
• Must be trained and proficient in HSC Central for accurate tracking, analysis, and reporting of HSE data, and capable of leveraging its full functionality to support compliance, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement across operations.
Qualifications & Experience:
• 5 – 7 years of experience in drilling, mining, or heavy industrial operations, with at least 2 years in a HSE or leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, and other relevant North American safety regulations.
• Demonstrated experience in injury case management, early intervention, and incident investigation.
• Experience managing or mentoring field-based HSE personnel.
• Professional certifications such as CSP, CHST, NEBOSH, or equivalent are highly desirable.
• Knowledge of workers compensation legislation
• Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and HSE management software (INX, SOLV).
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly to remote field locations across North America.
Working Conditions:
• Rostered work: You will spend most of your time out in the field visiting all sites to ensure compliance. Sometime will be allocated to the Salt Lake City office at the request of the Operations Manager.
• Travel: Required to visit drilling sites across North America
• Must be able to wear required PPE and meet site-specific medical and safety requirements.
