Location: Albany, NY | Hybrid (minimum 3 days on-site per week)Job OverviewMadison Approach Staffing is recruiting for a Health and Safety Specialist to support our client's Utility Operations division with a focus on construction and floating plant health and safety programs. This role will provide consistent and thorough health and safety support for canal construction projects, design reviews, and floating plant operations. The ideal candidate will review health and safety documentation, conduct site visits to active construction projects, develop templates and guidance for safety plans, and work collaboratively with managers and supervisors to ensure compliance with health and safety standards. This position requires regional and occasional statewide travel. This is an immediate-start, 12-month contract opportunity.Key Responsibilities
- Review and comment on all design documents and submittals related to health and safety
- Review and comment on all submitted health and safety plans for construction projects
- Develop templates and guidance for future submittals based on reviews and internal standards
- Attend all construction progress meetings and provide health and safety input
- Perform scheduled site visits to active construction projects to assess compliance and identify safety concerns
- Follow up on noted deficiencies with Construction Managers and ensure corrective actions are implemented
- Schedule and conduct meetings with Transportation Maintenance Engineers, Floating Plant Supervisors, and Director of Marine Infrastructure
- Review proposed new equipment and develop health and safety plans for canal floating plant tasks
- Perform site visits to floating plant job sites to monitor safety compliance
- Work with canal managers and supervisors to address action items and develop safety standards
- Collaborate with canal EHS representatives to become familiar with their areas and assist with emergent work and coverage during extended leaves
- Work with corporate EHS team to ensure processes are followed and initiatives are adopted across the organization
- Develop work plans in response to meetings and emerging safety needs
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience working on employee health and safety program implementation
- Computer Skills: Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to interact effectively with all levels of management and field personnel
- Industry Knowledge: Understanding of construction and industrial safety practices and regulations
- Travel: Ability to travel regionally and occasionally statewide as required
- Flexibility: Willingness to work some overtime when needed
- Must be local to the Tri-State area and available for W2 employment
Skills & Experience
- Associate's degree in a science field
- Industrial setting experience strongly
- Professional safety certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), or ASP (Associate Safety Professional)
- Experience with construction safety programs and OSHA regulations
- Background in infrastructure, utilities, or marine operations
- Experience developing safety training programs and materials
Work Schedule & Details
- Monday through Friday, 7.5-hour work day with 0.5-hour unpaid lunch
- Hybrid schedule with minimum 3 days on-site (remote work privileges may be adjusted based on business needs)
- Paid for time worked only; no paid holidays, vacation, or sick days during contract period
- Some regional to statewide travel required
- Some overtime may be required and must be authorized in advance
- Immediate start date available
