A Market Segment Leader (MSL) has dual primary responsibilities of obtaining new work and ensuring that the projects under their direction are completed to the client’s full satisfaction and at the Company’s expected levels of safety, environmental standards, quality, and profitability.

A MSL’s key responsibilities are:

  1. Participate in the Company’s strategic plan and lead its implementation
  2. Expand the Company’s business
  3. Deliver outstanding construction services
  4. Deliver safe, environmentally sound and profitable services
  5. Commit to continuous improvement of self and Company

1 – Participate in Clark Contracting Services strategic plan development and lead its implementation for your market sector

Objective: Ensure the company’s long-term plan reflects the business vision, mission, values, and objectives of its owners, first and foremost, and enable the Company to remain prosperous in the ever-changing markets that it serves and plan to serve.

Tasks:

  • Track and analyze long-term trends regarding existing and potential clients’ need and wants; market segments; competition; construction types, approaches, techniques and delivery methods; and other factors [1] that will affect the Company’s long-term activity and prosperity.
  • Evaluate and critically debate the impacts of the above analyses on the Company’s vision, mission, directions, policies, and practices.
  • Recommend and build consensus at the upper and top management level on strategic changes and new directions.
  • Structure and document 12 - 18 months implementation plan (“annual plan”) defining near term priorities in terms of business development, operations, and personnel.
  • Monitor the implementation plan, at least quarterly, and remain alert to unforeseen threats and opportunities.

2 – Expand the Company’s business

Objective: Increase the Company’s profitable revenues for assigned segment(s) per annual plan.

Tasks:

  • Set annual growth goals for assigned segment(s) with top management
  • Provide outstanding client services so that clients will want Clark Construction to execute their next projects and recommend the Company in their professional and personal circles
  • Nurture relationships with clients and architects in assigned segments
  • Leverage expertise in construction and relationship network to present compelling proposals to new and existing clients, in cooperation with Marketing & Planning departments and other field personnel
  • Close deals with prospect/clients and negotiate related contracts, with Dir Operations’ assistance
  • Be an expert on assigned segments and remain at the forefront of new technologies, business trends, and other major elements that impact one’s segments
  • Explore new segments and approaches to discover additional growth opportunities for the Company

3 – Deliver outstanding construction services

Objective: Ensure such a level of clients’ satisfaction that they will want Clark Contracting Services to execute their next projects and recommend the Company in their professional and personal circles.

Tasks:

  • Provide necessary assistance to ensure PMs fully understand and address clients’ needs, objectives, expected level of quality, constraints and concerns
  • Build lasting trust by communicating regularly with clients and answering to their needs and concerns
  • Initiate and lead the Initial/Progress Client Satisfaction Survey(s), and promptly address issues raised by clients with the project team
  • Relay clients’ needs and concerns to PM and project team, and, when necessary, prepare an action plan with PM to promptly address clients pressing issues.
  • Provide on-going feedback and explanations to clients, and decide/initiate necessary actions to keep clients at the highest satisfaction level
  • Recruit the most valuable field managers (from PE to PM) in one’s segment

4 – Deliver safe, environmentally sound, quality and profitable services

Objective: Ensure the Company’s expected levels of safety, quality, environmental standards and profit are met or exceeded on every project.

Tasks:

  • Provide necessary assistance to PMs and other members of the field team, and mentor them in their leadership role when preparing and executing their projects
  • Focus, while mentoring PMs, on:
    • Constructability issues and alternative approaches
    • Project schedule (keeping it as an effective planning and resource allocation tool)
    • Budget and Profit Projections preparation, and regular updates
    • Financial reviews and cash flow reports
    • Relationships between operational management and profit and other financial results
    • Provision of exceptional client service
    • Communication with owners (ranging from mundane updates and preconstruction presentations to crisis management)
  • Coach PM and Sr. PM in the performance of their responsibilities and their (and other project team members’) great achievements and results
  • Prepare recommendations for promotion of PEs, Superintendents, and PMs

5 – Commit to continuous improvement of self and Company

Objective: Enable self and Company to grow soundly, profitably and professionally.

Tasks:

  • Review 100% completion Client Satisfaction Survey and share analysis with project team; update “lessons learned” accordingly, when applicable
  • Perform annual reviews of supervised personnel and guide them in the determination of their improvement objectives.
  • Identify, mentor and groom field managers and other personnel with high potential to exercise higher responsibilities, up to Project Directorship
  • Remain critical of the Company’s processes and approaches to construction and its markets, and submit suggestions for improvement
  • Take a leading role as a volunteer in trade associations and organizations representing ones’ targeted segments to identify new trends and opportunities
  • Get actively involved in the communities that the Company serves
  • Be an example of Clark Construction’s professional services in all professional and community settings.
