The Assistant Maintenance Manager supports the Maintenance Manager in ensuring the proper operation, upkeep, and reliability of all plant equipment, facilities, and grounds. This includes manufacturing machinery, support equipment, vehicles, and building systems. The role serves as the secondary lead to the Maintenance Manager and assumes primary responsibility in their absence.
Working closely with the Maintenance Manager and Operations Manager, this position helps optimize plant performance, lead maintenance initiatives, and uphold safety, quality, and operational standards. Given the sensitive nature of the information involved, the Assistant Maintenance Manager must always maintain the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality.
The Assistant Maintenance Manager position reports to the Maintenance Manager / Operations Manager, and it is a salaried, exempt position with four (4) direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Operations
- Supervise and organize maintenance personnel schedules to maximize productivity.
- Assist in managing timely, cost-effective repairs to plant equipment, buildings, and grounds.
- Support the implementation and tracking of an effective Preventive Maintenance (PM) program; maintain PM records, review performance, and adjust intervals to minimize downtime and costs.
- Work with the Maintenance Manager to maintain an adequate spare parts inventory; source and procure materials domestically and internationally.
- Lead capital improvement and other assigned projects from bidding through commissioning.
- Prepare and maintain documentation related to maintenance activities and equipment performance history.
- Monitor manufacturing line downtime and conduct root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
- Assist in coordinating and supervising outside contractors in accordance with company guidelines.
- Support building maintenance needs, including landscaping, sprinkler systems, and HVAC.
- Ensure maintenance procedures comply with OSHA and company standards; assist in developing and training staff on these standards.
- Lead annual review and updates of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Contribute actively in company meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support after-hours, weekend, and holiday maintenance issues, including on-site response when required.
- Learn and be prepared to fully perform Maintenance Manager duties during absences.
General & Cross-Departmental Duties
- Promote and maintain a safe work environment.
- Participate in waste reduction and quality improvement programs.
- Support product improvement and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Maintain open communication with all departments to provide timely support.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; degree, certification, or equivalent technical training .
- Minimum 10 years of hands-on industrial/manufacturing maintenance experience, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
- Strong troubleshooting skills with direct knowledge of:

- Electrical controls and PLCs
- Drives and mechanical power transmission
- Pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics
- Proficiency in basic math, measurement tools (tape measure, caliper, micrometer), and safe use of hand/power tools.
- Ability to read, understand, and communicate instructions clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Flexible, organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Must be substance-free and willing to undergo random drug screenings.
- Strong team player with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Regular activities: sitting, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, reaching, handling, hearing, and talking.
- Exposure to strobe lights, heights, and non-temperature-controlled conditions.
- Frequent work on large automated production machinery and equipment.
- Capable of lifting 35 lbs. continuously and 50 lbs. as needed (with assistance for weights over 50 lbs.).
- Comfortable working at heights, on elevated platforms, and in non-climate-controlled environments.
- Able to operate industrial lift trucks and scissor lifts.
Work Schedule & Expectations
- Standard schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with after-hours availability for emergencies; plant operates 24/7/365.
- This role requires proficiency in all essential duties to meet performance expectations.
