Position Summary

This is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of the Fuel Mechanical group with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence as they acquire increasing knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

Fuel Mechanical Performance is part of the Nuclear Fuels Engineering Division (NED) located at Duke Energy's General Office in Charlotte. The Fuel Mechanical Performance group is responsible for several overlapping areas of responsibility; reload core design analysis of nuclear fuel predicted performance and reliability using computer simulation via NRC licensed methodologies, plant support of nuclear fuel related issues including in-core performance, inspections and reliability assurance and assessment, and nuclear fuel fabrication oversight and surveillance for manufacturing quality assurance.

This position requires high individual motivation to solve complex analytical problems and plant support issues. Due to the diversity of assignments within the Fuel Performance group, a continuous learning aptitude is required along with the willingness to assume various roles to levelized resources. This position also requires performance within a team oriented environment that is very supplier and customer focused thus placing a premium on well-developed communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures and continues to acquire new skills and knowledge.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Perform a variety of complex fuel rod mechanical analyses (rod internal pressure, fuel melt, cladding corrosion, etc.)
  • Accommodate emergent work and effectively multi-task while keeping supervision informed.
  • Follow NRC approved methodologies to perform fuel mechanical analyses.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other groups within NED, plant Engineering and Operations.
  • Participate in technical training activities such as attending technical seminars, computer code training, and group specific training classes.


Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a Master's degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering


Desired Qualifications
  • Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate or Professional Engineers License
  • Experience in running the following computer codes: PAD, TACO, COPERNIC, GALILEO or equivalent fuel performance software tools.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Unix/LINUX workstation experience
  • Computer programming experience FORTRAN/Python/VBA/etc


Specific Requirements
  • Must be able to obtain Nuclear Plant unescorted access
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the EOF facility and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
