Position Summary

As a Technician in the Exeter office you will be working on a variety of project types, sizes and complexities. Responsibilities include:

  • To support the preparation of designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables for highway engineering schemes
  • Production of detailed drawings from sketches, plans, specification, and written and verbal instructions, primarily using AutoCAD
  • Supporting feasibility, design and supervision of improvements to existing highway infrastructure including site visits, inspections and surveys, compliance with statutory procedures, and cost estimating
  • Supporting working and liaising effectively with contractors, suppliers and outside agencies and participating effectively in partnership arrangements with our clients
  • To ensure that designs are appropriate and meet expected levels of technical excellence
  • To seek innovation in the delivery of schemes and techniques used to design and construct them
  • Contribute to our Lean approach to driving efficiency and removing waste from our processes


Essential Criteria

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Mathematics and English
  • ONC qualification in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • Good knowledge of working with AutoCAD
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software packages
  • Ability to interpret topographic and highway alignment information and produce neat, accurate general arrangement drawings and highway standard detail drawings
  • Good communication skills and able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Awareness of Health & Safety Legislation
  • Ability to plan work to make optimum use of time
  • A good awareness of Highways design guidance and standards

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, KeySIGN, KeyLINES, PDS Sign and Line and Navisworks
  • Awareness of BIM (Building Information Modelling)
  • HNC qualification in Civil Engineering (or working towards qualification)
  • EngTech membership with the ICE
