Job description

The successful candidate will join Imperial's research team that is working to continuously improve environmental performance at Imperial's oil sands mining and in-situ operations.

The successful candidate will have or develop:
  • Deep understanding of novel and emerging genomics-based molecular approaches to measuring biodiversity, with a focus on forest soil biodiversity
  • Understanding of the application of genomics in mined or in situ developed oil sands closure and reclamation, including potential tailings applications.

Research engineering aspects of the role include:
  • Developing a research program to assess genomics applications for reclamation monitoring
  • Interpreting genomics data captured on current reclamation sites
  • Advising on applicability of genomics data as a tool for other environmental challenges
  • Collaborating with technical experts and researchers from ExxonMobil's Upstream Research Company and the Centre for Environmental Genomics Applications (CEGA) - a new research centre established in St John's, NL, specifically to advance genomics technologies for environmental assessment and monitoring applications


  • PhD in Microbiology or equivalent
  • Excellent communication skills

Start date: January 2019

Work term: 2 year term

Location: Calgary, AB
