Full Time
The Role:

Tesla is seeking an exceptional engineer with a strong background in electrical design who is motivated to change the way people think about their vehicles. Unrivaled range, ludicrous performance, top-of-the-line comfort and long-term reliability depend on designing and executing new and exciting thermal system solutions. This is a design and development position where having a strong understanding of electrical engineering design, component/system characterization, engineering fundamentals, and an ability to work quickly and effectively on open ended problems are far more important than experience with particular tools. Success in this role is critical for vehicle thermal performance, supercharge capability, occupant comfort, and noise inside/outside the cabin.

  • Lead electrical design and integration of all vehicle level thermal components including pumps, fans, high voltage heater, high voltage compressor, actuators and sensors.
  • Designs should be optimized for performance, efficiency, reliability and cost.
  • Work cross-functionally with 12V Controller team, Harness team, Firmware team, and Battery / Drive System teams, to integrate thermal components into the vehicle from concept to production.
  • Support vehicle testing activities, production concerns and new model launch as required by work flow priority.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering; or equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability.
  • Experience solving new and open ended design problems.
  • Familiarity with controls and data acquisition programs and software for EE development.
  • Proven electronic design of analog, digital, and/or embedded systems.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language used in system automation and test. ex: python, Perl, php, etc.
  • The ideal candidate will have designed EE systems from concept to development to production and test.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with off-the-shelf embedded electronics such as Arduino, Parallax BASIC Stamp, etc.
  • Knowledge of automotive thermal and HVAC systems including compressors, HVAC assembly, heat exchangers, fluid transfer components, etc.
  • Experience with PCB board layout and controller integration.
  • Experience with first-principles understanding of motor controls including brushed, brushless, & stepper designs.
  • Experience with CAN/LIN protocol.
  • Familiarity with high voltage DC systems.
