Tesla Motors is seeking an exceptional engineer with a strong understanding of aerodynamics who is motivated to change the way people think about their vehicles. Unrivaled range, ludicrous performance, top-of-the-line comfort and long-term reliability depend on creating the most sophisticated aerodynamics and best vehicle interior ever. This Aerodynamicist will be responsible for identifying opportunities for aerodynamic improvement as well as implementing clean sheet designs of HVAC units, HVAC ducting, powertrain cooling ducting, heat exchanger sizing and layouts, fan sizing and layouts, and more.

This is an analysis position where having a strong understanding of aerodynamics and an ability to work quickly and effectively on open-ended problems is far more important than experience with particular tools. You don't just use CFD or vehicle testing to evaluate aerodynamic geometries/concepts that other people have developed. You drive the aerodynamic design forward. Success in this role is critical for vehicle performance, supercharge capability, occupant comfort, and noise inside/outside the cabin.

  • Generate ground breaking aerodynamic concepts and drive from initial surfacing through simulation, optimization, testing, manufacturing feasibility and into production

Required skills:
  • Strong understanding of turbulent vs laminar flows, attached and separated flows, vortex dynamics and other flow structures
  • Strong understanding of the strengths, weaknesses and limitations of the tools that are used for aerodynamic development including CFD and testing
  • Excellent engineering fundamentals and use of hand calculations to make quick decisions or validate simulation/test results
  • Understanding of wall modeling, mesh sensitivity and Y+ (if you have CFD experience)
  • Ability to evaluate designs at a system level and choose/develop the best metrics to make decisions

Desired skills:
  • Ability to use surfacing tools to lead the creation of aerodynamic geometries in CAD
  • Ability to use scripts to expedite and automate your studies
  • Experience in various types of CFD simulations including water separation, defrost, wading, soiling and snow packing
  • Working knowledge of automotive thermal systems, including Radiators, Condensers, Fans, HVAC Units and HVAC vent design
  • Working knowledge of occupant comfort/physiology, psychrometrics and heat transfer

Required Qualifications:
  • MS or PhD in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering; or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability
