The Role

The position for Test Engineer is on Battery Safety and R&D Team within the broader Technology Team, and supports mechanical, electrical, and thermal safety testing across Tesla's Energy Products battery systems (Powerpack, Powerwall, etc.). The candidate should be well-versed in test implementation, data acquisition and analysis. This is a cross-functional role which involves work with several design, manufacturing and test teams, therefore requiring exceptional organizational and communications skills to manage and streamline testing deadlines and competing priorities.


• Perform battery and product safety validation testing for Energy Products Battery Systems, including but not limited to:

o Recording and analyzing data collected during testing.

o Conducting pre- and post- test inspections.

• Provide clear and concise documentation related to tests, including parts under test and their status. Capture identified failures in detail and work with engineering teams to facilitate resolution of failures.

• Design and build test fixtures to improve test efficiency and data collection, by applying knowledge of parts used in Energy Product's in order to simulate test cases accurately. Create documentation of test fixture designs to increase speed of fixture replication.

• Work with multiple design teams to schedule the receipt of new test articles product components into testing.

• Develop new test protocols and instrumentation diagrams to support testing of new or prototype components and products.

• Troubleshoot and debug issues with test equipment.

• Maintain and expand clean, safe, and organized working environments. Apply workplace organization concepts and methods to improve efficiency, such as 5S.


• Experience with software such as: LabVIEW, MATLAB, MS Excel, and MS Visio.

• BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability.

• Broad experience working in cross-functional teams to drive product development and a demonstrated ability to influence design direction based on test results.

• Skilled in using volt meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, programmable power suppliers, and PC digital and analog interfaces.

• Prefer experience with high voltage products.

• Mechanical fabrication skills are a plus.

• Candidates must have the ability and willingness to travel to support off-site testing (up to 20%).
