The Role

Tesla is looking for a dynamic and team-oriented Technical Publications Manager to lead the Energy Products Technical Publications group, which documents the Tesla energy product lines.

The Energy Products Technical Publications group delivers a range of publications, including owner's guides, warranties, installation manuals, work instructions, service bulletins, application notes, specification sheets, software release notes, compliance documents, and web content for internal and external audiences, such as homeowners, installers, sales engineers, support and service technicians, regulatory agencies, and utilities.

The Technical Publications Manager will lead writers and illustrators in multiple locations and manage all aspects of documentation, including content creation and revision, tools and infrastructure, delivery schedules, editorial and visual style, localization, and online and print distribution.

  • Engage, coach and develop a team of writers and illustrators
  • Work with internal clients and team members to manage goals and priorities
  • Coordinate with Product Management to align strategically with the product roadmap
  • Work with tools developers to maintain authoring applications and migrate content to a structured authoring environment
  • Drive development of tracking, reporting, and change management processes
  • Manage various budgets and supplier/vendor relationships, in particular for translation and printed publications
  • Manage documentation localization strategy and coordinate translation workflow for technical and legal documentation
  • Collaborate with writers and illustrators across the organization to create and maintain editorial and visual style guides for energy technical documentation
  • Work with IT development teams and the web team to manage and update portals and other tools for content management and distribution
  • Coordinate with Training and Support organizations to promote efficient reuse of content
  • Provide editorial support for technical documentation across the organization as needed

  • Bachelor's degree in English, technical writing, or a related degree, and/or 5+ years of technical publication management experience.
  • Experience in technical writing for products related to the energy industry preferred
  • Experience with high-tech energy products such as battery systems, fuel cells, power conversion systems or solar generation systems a plus
  • Proven ability to manage, motivate, collaborate with, and lead teams in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with budget management and supplier relationships
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience developing and maintaining documentation in a structured authoring environment (e.g., XML/DITA)
  • Experience with content management systems (e.g., SDL LiveContent Architect)
  • Working knowledge of structured authoring and publishing tools (e.g., oXygen, Arbortext Editor, XMetal)
  • Working knowledge of illustration development methods, tools, and delivery formats (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Experience authoring for international audiences
  • Experience developing documentation strategies for large organizations
  • Ability to think strategically to scope and prioritize needs across products and departments
  • Proven professional attitude toward work assignments and customer relationships
  • Exceptional project management skills and ability to lead various projects in parallel
  • Positive attitude toward change and inevitable mid-project course corrections
