The Role

Tesla Energy is looking for an amazing Staff Firmware Engineer to drive next generation designs and improve current designs using outstanding technical, planning, and leadership skills. This role entails significant ownership of our world class Powerpack and Powerwall firmware, ranging from architecture, implementation, through validation and ongoing fleet improvements.

  • Set the standard of technical and leadership excellence for the team. You will be capable of executing any level of the firmware design and validation process, to lead from the front.
  • Drive firmware development for performance, scalability, modularity, reliability, and tight integration with the hardware.
  • Develop, enhance and debug new and existing real-time firmware in C and C++.
  • Hands-on hardware bringup, system debugging and code optimization.
  • Develop thermal controller control loops, and participate in simulation in modeling.
  • Develop physics based battery management algorithms.
  • Implement continuous improvements and best practices within the team, and larger organization.
  • Drive firmware/hardware co-design for optimized solutions and schedules.
  • Collaboratively create and drive the energy products firmware development roadmap.

  • BSEE, MSEE, or PhD in Engineering Discipline.
  • 5+ years of professional firmware development experience.
  • Capable of delivering top quality C and C++ code in a real time embedded environment.
  • Significant project experience in technical leadership role, must be able to demonstrate strong technical depth and leadership capability.
  • Test driven development experience, and passion for developer driven automated testing.
  • Strong experience in optimized computing for power conversion, thermal controls, or battery management: Multi-processing, PWM, A/D, and acceleration engines/instruction sets.
  • Multithreaded and (Free) RTOS experience.
  • Fluent with the embedded microprocessor design process: compilers, debuggers, IDE and source code control.
  • Expert software fundamentals including software design, algorithm development, data structures, code modularity and maintainability.
  • Fundamentals in physics and first principles is required.
  • Background in battery management firmware and algorithms preferred.
  • Remain engaged, proactive and positive in tough circumstances, owning assignments and taking full accountability for overall team success.
  • Possess strong communication skills and a preference for delivering as part of a team.
