The Role

Full-time, career position in the Service Technical Publications department. Documentation specialties depend on background and experience:
  • Service technical writers create and maintain documentation for vehicle mechanical repair procedures (service manual), auto body repair procedures (body repair manual), vehicle service bulletins, tooling, and customer-facing forms. Documents are delivered online. Audiences include Tesla customers, Tesla service technicians, aftermarket repairers, and body shops.

Service technical writers are primarily located in Fremont, California.
  • Owner technical writers primarily create and maintain documentation for Tesla vehicle functions (owner's manual). Other documents include warranty, safety information, roadside assistance, charge connectors, and installations of high voltage equipment. Manuals are delivered in-print, in-vehicle, and online. Audiences include Tesla customers and electrical installers.

Owner technical writers are primarily located in Palo Alto, California.

Responsibilities

  • Consider all aspects of a document request. Anticipate potential downstream issues that were not considered by others
  • Collaborate with technicians and engineers to document processes.
  • Comprehend and extract system operation information from engineering documentation and tools (such as schematics, system specifications, and Enovia product lifecycle management tools).
  • Create content and update existing content.
  • Ensure content is accurate (for example, validate information accuracy, peer review others' content, and follow review processes).
  • Strategize and implement process improvements, for both documentation processes and peripherally-related processes.
  • Source and use graphics appropriately (for example, request figures from technical illustrators, take photos, and edit photos and figures to highlight areas of interest to users).
  • Manage tasks and information flow using collaboration software (such as JIRA, Wrike, SharePoint, Quickbase, and custom databases).

Requirements
  • Technical writing experience (software and/or hardware) with knowledge of relevant content development tools.
  • Bachelor's degree, certificate in Technical Writing, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong attention to detail, strong personal organization, collaboration, and time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members (face to face and through e-mail).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging work environment with very tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proven professional attitude toward work assignments, team members, and end users.
  • Positive attitude toward change and inevitable mid-project course corrections.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel experience at an intermediate or higher level.
  • Provide high quality writing samples and/or take a writing test.

Desired Qualifications and Abilities:
  • Markup language experience (such as HTML, XML, DITA XML, or SGML).
  • Structured authoring tool experience (such as oXygen, XMetaL, structured FrameMaker, or Arbortext Editor).
  • Content Management System (CMS) experience (such as SDL LiveContent Architect).
  • Documentation strategy and architecture experience.
  • Style guideline experience (Simplified Technical English, S1000D, MIL-STD, MMSTP, or custom style guide creation or contributions).
  • Writing for translation or localization experience.
  • Automotive repair or engineering (design or testing) experience; mechanical aptitude with hand tools.
