The Role

Tesla Energy is looking for a power systems engineer to build on our in-house capability to model our energy storage products in power flow and dynamic modeling platforms and be an interface with utilities, IPPs, and ISOs in technical power systems discussions. You will be responsible for developing detailed models of Tesla Energy's technology and control strategies in order to characterize the technology in various grid applications. The role will be diverse, fast-paced, and span across multiple levels of electrical design and comprehension from product level decisions to grid level implications.

Responsibilities
  • Act as the technical representative for power flow and dynamic modeling discussions with customers. You must show the ability to articulate power systems analyses/results and the interaction of Tesla's technology with the grid.
  • Continue to increase our in-house capability to model Tesla's product in power systems analysis software, to include microgrid applications with various interconnected resources and larger "macro" grid applications. Modeling will include both steady state and transient analysis, with the intent of accurately characterizing the performance of the system in various grid applications and grid conditions.
  • Work with both the product design team and the firmware/software teams to keep models current with the technology roadmap.
  • Work with customers and business development team to create models to represent the Tesla Energy system in power flow and dynamic modeling software tools. For dynamic user written models required by various ISOs, this could include the creation of the models or managing consultants to satisfy the ISO's interconnection requirements.

Requirements
  • Strong working knowledge of power flow software. PSS\E, PSLF, DIgSILENT, and PowerWorld working knowledge a plus.
  • Experience with power flow studies, including AC contingency analyses and transient stability analyses. CAISO or other North American ISO grid familiarity a plus.
  • Experience with dynamic user written models a plus.
  • Must demonstrate a fundamental understanding of grid impacts due to adding or removing generation.
  • Strong MATLAB Simulink skills, demonstrate ability to create dynamic models from scratch.
  • Strong working knowledge of control theory, ability to implement PID control
  • Real world experience with microgrids is a plus
  • Skills with common workplace software (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software etc) with the ability to create and maintain metrics.
  • Ability to work cross functionally with engineering, business development, and deployment personnel.
  • BS in electrical engineering.
  • MS in power systems is a plus.
