Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, the leading global provider of wind energy solutions is expanding its research and development (R & D) capability in the UK with new investments in its facility at Keele University and Glasgow.
Made up of specialist engineers, researchers and support staff, the UK R&D department is primarily responsible for developing new power converters and related technologies for large onshore and offshore wind turbines. The Glasgow based Converter Control team are an integral part of this department and are responsible for the successful integration of the power converter and its associated controls into onshore and offshore wind farms. 
 
Located at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy R&D office in Glasgow city centre, this role involves the design and modelling of wind turbine power converter controls and the integration of the control system into the wider turbine and farm power network. An in depth knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink is a requirement, as is a background in either control theory, power converter control, power systems, power electronics. Experience of RTDS real time simulation environment would be useful.  We are looking for someone technically competent who can manage and own the given tasks, who has good communication skills and can take the initiative in resolving technical issues. A capable individual, motivated and a good communicator .Your duties will include the following:
 What are my responsibilities?
  • Development and support of wind turbine converter advanced control systems for AC and HVDC connected wind farms.   
  • Development and verification of time and frequency domain models for high power wind turbinesto allow performance analysis (stability, resonance, harmonics, transient and steady state performance)
  • Working as team member with other members of UK R&D team and wider engineering team.
  •  Capturing and documentation of detailed requirements and acceptance criteria.
  • Stability analysis and definition of system design solutions for stable operation under all operating conditions.
  • Evaluation of potential technical solutions for converter control and impact/requirements on power systems and power electronics.
  • Validation of models in Simulation/ RTDS/laboratory/wind turbines
  • Willingness to travel to as required for site testing and validation of developed control solutions
What do I need to qualify for this job?
This role requires someone who is educated to at least degree level in Electrical/Electronic engineering with specialization in control theory/ power electronics/ power systems / electrical machines. You will have demonstrable knowledge of power converter control, 3 phase power systems, HVDC power transmission systems, time domain and frequency domain simulation techniques. 
This role also requires experience of real time control systems, RSCAD, RTDS, Matlab and C would be advantageous. Also advantageous would be experience of 690V 3 phase lab testing environment.
A keen interest in Renewable Energy (wind energy) is desirable.
