Employees in this job perform as CNC Machine operators responsible for operations on a variety of machined profiles, including threads.


The job duties listed are typical examples of the work performed by positions in this job classification. Not all duties assigned to every position are included, nor is it expected that all positions will be assigned every duty.
  • Studies drawings and prints of work to be performed and follows NC programs to complete and finish parts.
  • May be required to de-burr parts within specifications.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of different machines.
  • Must be able to determine the proper set up of tooling and applicable fixtures appropriate to run the parts.
  • Must be able to understand and operate applicable machine controllers
  • Must understand G-Code basics
  • Must be able to calculate machine feeds and speeds.
  • Must be able to fabricate chuck jaws as applicable to the job requirements.
  • Must be able to read precision measuring devices.
  • Must completely follow shop related safety protocol, policies, and procedures.
  • Must wear all required PPE.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including overtime and weekends.
  • Must be able to properly complete a daily time sheet.
  • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment used in the work and keep the work area clean.
  • Operates jib cranes as necessary to perform work.
  • Performs related work as assigned.


  • Knowledge of materials, hand tools, cutting tools and general machining processes is required.
  • Knowledge of the machining qualities and properties of a variety of metals; alloys, aluminum, cast iron, etc.
  • Knowledge of Occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the machinist's trade.
  • Ability to read and independently work from plans, sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • The job duties require an employee to bend and reach for extended periods.
  • The job duties require the employee to bend or stoop.
  • The job duties require the employee to walk or stand for long periods.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Education level typically acquired through completion of high school (or equivalent) and/or vocational-technical training.

  • Prefer 3-4 years' experience as a machinist and/or machine operator. Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

  • Knowledge and experience in NC programming languages a plus.
  • Combined experience in operations of lathe and mill a plus.

CNC Machinist Levels:
  • Apprentice Level: An individual designated as an entry level machinist obtaining experience through on the job training or other organized and systematic form of instruction. This individual is still learning knowledge of theoretical and technical subjects and criteria related to machining.
  • Journeyman Level: An individual who has documented sufficient skills and knowledge of the machining trade and occupation, either through formal apprenticeship or through practical on the job experience, and formal training. This individual is recognized as being specifically qualified to perform a full range of machinist assignments and uses independent judgment in making decisions where alternatives are determined by established procedures, methods and practices.
  • Master Level: This is the advanced level and refers to an individual maintaining or recognized as a mentor or specialist. This individual knows how to provide instruction and training in the proper methods and processes necessary to carry out the most complex assignments. This individual can resolve either theoretical or technical problems and can definitively answer questions for another machinist.
