We are part of the Engineering department of Vestas Power Solutions. This is where new turbines and power solutions are created, and we continually strive to lower the cost of energy for our customers.

The Data, Simulation & Modelling department is responsible for the simulation and modelling of the weather and climate and how they affect the wind turbines in the real world. We also serve as the central hub for all the sensor data that Vestas collects from over 30,000 turbines, bringing it together in our large data warehouse. Furthermore, we are responsible for the high performance computing and big data systems that serve as the technical platforms for these services.

Responsibilities
You will be the bridge between our simulation and weather modelling specialists and the high performance computing systems running our solutions. As such, you need to be able to understand and challenge the mathematical modelling methods used, but also to understand how to build robust software solutions that can be used in a production environment delivering data to customers all over the world.

Your primary responsibilities will cover to:
  • Work with large, complex data sets and develop robust and scalable code to analyze it
  • Research, define, and develop new methods for weather modelling and forecasting
  • Perform technical design, requirements analyses, and documentation in collaboration with the business
  • Design and build robust, maintainable solutions on our high performance computing system
  • Provide efficient use of external software development partners

Qualifications
  • Relevant Masters' degree and preferably PhD degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) or similar
  • Work experience where software development was a major component of your work

Competencies
Minimum required professional skills:
  • Highly proficient in Python, R or similar high level programming languages
  • Ability to interface with diverse groups (scientific teams, developers, business users) and understand end-to-end requirements
  • Experience with mathematical modelling or statistics
  • Professional experience building software solutions (preferably Linux environment)
  • Strong understanding of data modelling and database technology, e.g. PostgreSQL
  • Strong written and oral presentation / communication / visualization skills

Preferred professional skills:
  • Experience with machine learning methods
  • Knowledge within meteorology, atmospheric science or flow modeling
  • Experience automating software deployments and following a continuous delivery and deployment model
  • Experience with big data tools, such as Spark, and associated programming languages (Scala, Java)
  • Experience with containers and cloud architectures

As a person you possess the following competencies:
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize tasks - and to complete assigned projects with minimal supervisions
  • Systematic problem solving skills with a strong sense of ownership and drive
  • Aptitude to independently and continuously learn new methods and technologies
