Engineering Manager - Energy Storage

WRS has been engaged by a leading engineering services provider in the renewable energy sector who are significantly expanding their Energy Storage team due to significant growth over the last few years as well as actively pursuing distributed and utility-scale energy storage projects in the meantime.

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for driving the growth of storage business and for performing, managing, and reviewing technical work performed by the team

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the Energy Storage Team with project development, equipment selection, supplier quote reviews, utility coordination, controls design, Microgrid design, project start up, commissioning, QAQC and execution
  • Oversee all aspects of design for energy storage
  • Establish team goals, objectives, performance metrics, and initiatives to support corporate objectives
  • Work in conjunction and coordinate with Business Development, Project Development, Presales, and Operations Team to deliver the best product to our clients
  • Review and improve standards, best practices, and processes on a regular basis
  • Define and drive accountability, consistency, quality, standardization, and compliance
  • Manage, assign, and prioritize tasks for the team
  • Identify project requirements based on the utility interconnect agreements, contractual agreements, regulatory requirements, code requirements, etc. and ensure compliance
  • Manage engineering budgets and costs for all projects
  • Perform cost estimates, scheduling, subcontractor/vendor selection and take offs
  • Provide leadership, guidance and directly perform the execution of the following high voltage engineering activities:
  • Review substation design including layouts, plans, sections and details, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, platform cabling systems, transformers (including Main & Earthing Auxiliary transformers), switchgear, system studies and more for utility scale BESS and PV systems
  • Protection and control design including panel arrangements, single lines, three lines, AC schematics, DC elementaries, equipment wiring and relay panel wiring
  • Calculations for studies and reports (lighting protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.)Integration of equipment, equipment specifications for procurement, testing and commissioning
  • Assist in preparation of proposals and scope development for feasibility opportunities, conceptual designs, preliminary design, IFP design, IFC design, and execution plans
  • Identification of potential suppliers
  • Preparation and review of supplier documentation
  • EPC package preparation and execution documentation
  • Review quotes, descope and assist with buyout of HV EPC
  • Undertake challenging assignments that include investigating, troubleshooting, and solving a wide variety of electrical engineering problems
  • Manage engineering consultants and third-party engineering firms for calculations, drawing packages, professional stamps, and value engineering
  • Track project design schedules and coordinate with the operations team to ensure expectations are set correctly and design deadlines are met
  • Lead internal and external engineering review meetings, support operations team on client meetings
  • Safeguard the organization’s intellectual property, proprietary designs, templates, and engineering work
  • Use understanding of construction logistics, site preparation, material and labor costs to optimize designs
  • Travel to project sites when required
  • Perform electrical surveys, witness tests, performance tests, etc. as required for the projects
  • Perform quality control/quality assurance checks, including checking drawings and specifications prior to release
  • On an ongoing basis, provide support to commissioning and O&M, as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from accredited university
  • 10+ years of practical experience with electrical design, DC collection, AC collection, MV and HV electrical design bot executing on and building an engineering team
  • 5+ years designing Energy Storage Systems
  • 5+ years of experience with cost estimates, scheduling, subcontractor/vendor selection and take offs
  • Previous experience managing, leading, and building a team of Engineers and CAD Engineers
  • Strong understanding of all relevant codes and experience working with utilities across the USA
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects is a must
  • Experience drafting or reviewing engineering services contracts
  • Must be able to identify problems, find and develop solutions, make decisions, and execute them effectively
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD
  • Proficiency in PVSYST
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • NABCEP Certified PV Installation Professional a plus
  • PE License is a plus
