Job Description
The objective of the internship is to continue a study started in 2015 and to compare the different hindcast and forecast models available either publicly and/or internally within TOTAL. The final purpose will be to determine each model's pros and cons by comparing models against each other and against in situ data when available.
The metocean parameters to be considered are wind (speed and direction), wave (height, period and direction, swell and wind sea) and current (speed and direction) at the surface and through the water column.
The models to be considered, among others, are:
  • Hindcast :
    • WaveWatch 3 (medium - 1° x 1.25° - and high resolution - 0.5° x 0.5° -) from NOAA-NCEP
    • IOWAGA from Ifremer
    • Oceanweather models owned by TOTAL and covering the following geographical areas : West Africa, South East Asian Seas, Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, North Sea and Australia North-West Shelf.
    • NORA10 from Meteorological Norwegian Institute (owned by TOTAL)
    • Gulf of Guinea (owned by TOTAL)
  • Forecast (mainly wind and 3D current):
    • Danish Hydraulics Institute (DHI) in North Sea
    • Satocean in North Sea, West Africa, Persian Gulf, Bulgaria and Malaysia
    • Actimar in Bulgaria
The above list will be discussed and finalized with the intern' supervisor in order to establish a more detailed scope of work.
The following geographical areas for which the models will be compared against each other shall be, by order of importance:
  • Update from 2016 (if new datasets available)
    • West Africa
    • South Africa
    • South America
  • New areas
    • South East Asian Seas
    • Persian Gulf
    • West of Shetlands
    • North Sea
    • Australia
The objective is to select the best possible model for each area depending on its final use (design criteria, oil spill modeling, etc.)
The comparisons will include usual methods at selected points on the models (taking into account available climatology, scatter plots, Q-Q plots, etc.) and also spatial variations comparisons using methods already applied internally.
English shall be the written language and all reports and attached documentation, Matlab scripts, etc. shall be delivered accordingly.
