Role synopsis
The Crude and Feedstock Supply role is part of the Crude Knowledge Team (CKT) based in the Modelling Department within Refining Technology and Engineering (RTE). The CKT focuses on providing data, information and knowledge on the quality of Crude Oils and Feedstocks that R&M purchase. The role is based in 30 South Wacker, Chicago, co-located with IST, Supply Co-ordinators, Asset Economists, front-line IST trading benches and with IST New Business Development Teams. The successful candidate would have an in-depth knowledge of crude oil qualities and the technical challenges they present to refining operations. Ideally the candidate would have experience of IST and fuels refining operations to support the trading floor supply chain. (Production - Trading - Shipping/Pipeline- Refining).

Key accountabilities
  • Provides short, mid, and long term technical support to Fuels North America (NA) refining stakeholders throughout the crude supply chain in support of the Advantaged Feedstocks fuels strategic priority.
  • Leads multiple cross RTE / IST / Refining team projects in a collaborative one team approach.
  • Management of the feedstock assay program for Fuels NA, co-ordinating the development of feedstock test slates and delivering the required analytical program, building and delivering feedstock representations and interfacing with IST and the sites to ensure business needs are met.
  • Works closely with RTE's technology department in providing guidance and building technical capability.
  • Manages compatibility testing within the assay program, conducting ad-hoc studies with the RTE Fouling Science team to support daily operations at Fuels NA refining sites and providing training and consultation to model users.
  • Key member of the Assay Assurance Project Team and must be an excellent communicator ensuring that the Assay Assurance Project Team are fully aware of the commercial impact of the work requests resulting from the front-line interactions with the above stakeholders.
  • Supports the development and capability of junior project members to ensure that fit for purpose representations of crude oils are produced.
  • Responsible for supervising a junior CKT member setting their daily work priorities and coaching co-ops who rotate through the team.

Essential Education
  • Degree (BSc or equivalent) in Engineering or Chemistry or Equivalent Science.

Essential experience and job requirements
  • In depth knowledge of the properties of Crude Oil and their impact.
  • Ability to formulate a problem statement from unstructured/conflicting information.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory analytical test methods.
  • Working knowledge of crude and product transportation system.
  • Working knowledge of refinery operations.
  • Ability to work effectively within a project team and lead when required.
  • Project Management skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with the teams that CKT supports.
  • Good IT skills e.g. Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to focus effort and prioritise work to deliver business valueDemonstrates respect for other people's cultures and perspectives.

Desirable criteria & qualifications
  • Experience of asphaltene fouling and compatibility issues.
  • Working knowledge of the CrudeSuite toolset.
  • Specific experience of asphaltene fouling and knowledge of the Crude Oil compatibility model, test methods and interpretation would be a plus.
