The Lead Manufacturing Engineer will be accountable for multiple technical processes and equipment in the production of commercial nuclear fuel. Part of the technical team responsible for the Fuel Manufacturing operation in the Nuclear business. The team manufactures ceramic pellets and rod assemblies which are then assembled into nuclear fuel bundles for commercial nuclear power plants. This engineer is one of the responsible Area Engineers for Fuel Manufacturing Operations.

Essential Responsibilities

As the Lead Manufacturing Engineer - Fuel Fabrication, you will:
  • Be responsible for Powder, Ceramic, and Assembly manufacturing processes including process development, monitoring, analysis, issue resolution, and change
  • Embrace Global Nuclear Fuel's nuclear safety culture, where work is performed with an overriding priority on integrity, safety, security and quality
  • Be responsible for understanding Items Relied On For Safety (IROFS) and other safety controls for equipment and able to design, implement, execute, and review Function Test Instructions (FTIs) to ensure operability
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and quality regulations and metrics through use of compliance calendars, databases and tracking systems
  • Review, design, generate, update, and monitor manufacturing equipment, devices, systems and processes in the fuel fabrication area, including both mechanical and electrical / instrumentation aspects of equipment
  • Develop and/or improve process automation of existing or new manufacturing processes
  • Modernize manufacturing techniques and process monitoring to predict and prevent process upsets and downtime, and minimize scrap/waste generation
  • Maintain, review, update and create area operating procedures (OPs), temporary operating procedures (TOPs), job hazards analyses (JHA) and chemical job hazards analyses (CJHA)
  • Be responsible for supporting planned and unplanned maintenance activities
  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) initiatives in the fuel manufacturing operation, including process development and design of experiments (DOE)'s
  • Identify and implement proactive solutions for incremental and step change process improvements related to safety, quality and output through use of Lean and Six Sigma tools
  • Train and assess hourly operators in sound techniques and proper operation of equipment to meet safety, quality and output targets


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or equivalent technical discipline from an accredited university with a minimum of 3 years of experience in nuclear fuel fabrication, nuclear operations, industrial maintenance, manufacturing quality or manufacturing operations (OR a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 8 years of experience in nuclear fuel fabrication, nuclear operations, industrial maintenance, engineering, manufacturing quality or manufacturing / process operations)
  • Ability to wear a respirator and other personnel protective equipment in accordance with site requirements.
  • Ability to be able to relocate to Wilmington, NC
  • Be authorized to have access to nuclear technology

Desired Characteristics

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Ceramics Engineering
  • Master's Degree in Science or Engineering
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and process engineering skills
  • Experience in nuclear fuel fabrication
  • Experience with ceramics manufacturing and/or bulk powder processing and handling. (Sintering, Milling, Pressing, Blending, Sifting, Transport, etc.)
  • Familiar with basic operation, troubleshooting and application of industrial equipment and processes such as pumps, piping, motors, fans, valves, gears, mixing, heating, cooling, chemical reactions, furnaces, heat exchangers, hoods, vibrators, hydraulics etc
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC), and/or Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and the associated human/machine interfaces (HMI)
  • Experience with creating and supporting process automation systems, process monitoring systems, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) creation and maintenance
  • Experience with creation and support of automation equipment (steppers, servos, solenoids, cylinders, actuators, relays, etc.)
  • Experience with selection, calibration, and application of appropriate process monitoring I/O hardware (Temperature, Flow, Pressure, Level, Concentration, Density, Purity, Humidity, etc.)
  • Experience with developing, implementing, and using process historians to monitor operations
  • Experience with identifying Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to efficiently monitor for process health
  • Experience with equipment installation and facilities modifications, including management of capital and expense projects
  • Experience with NRC Regulations, Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) or Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA)
  • Proficiency with PC and productivity software [examples include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint]
  • Direct knowledge of FMO Fuel Business System software
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills and success working on cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated work record of meeting goals and objectives
  • Demonstrated use and understanding of a change management process
  • Experience in manufacturing or nuclear procedure and training development
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and function calmly and effectively in stressful situations
  • Demonstrated high integrity in decisions, communications, actions and interpersonal relationships
  • Six Sigma Certification or equivalent quality certification
