The Mechanical engineer role will support the Analytical Instruments business and will be responsible for developing and designing instrumentation and sensors from the ground up using 3D design methods.

Essential Responsibilities

As the Mechanical Engineer - Analytical Instruments, you will:
  • Manage design phases through design review process and prototyping
  • Organize and run designed experiments to test instrument prototype mechanical, electrical and thermal performance
  • Optimize sheet metal design, aluminum casting design and component placement for ease of use, maintenance and manufacturability.
  • Develop procedures for instrument assembly and manufacture. Organize instrument documentation from bills of material to specification sheets for purchasing
  • Be responsible for managing vendor relationships through component testing to maximize cost vs. performance
  • Have the ability to interface with a diverse group of people and communicate effectively in writing and speech
  • Have the ability to solve complex electro-mechanical and micro-fluidic problems
  • Have a positive can-do attitude in a fast-paced, schedule driven environment
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office productivity tools (Excel, Outlook, Word)
  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
  • Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project
  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments
  • Participate on teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and generic issues
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures


  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of product design experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with SolidWorks CAD

Desired Characteristics

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing techniques and processes
  • Ability to read, interpret and create mechanical drawings, especially sheet metal, plastic injection-molded and machined part drawings, utilizing GD&T per ASME/ANSI Y14.5M
  • Ability to use SolidWorks PDM (formerly Enterprise PDM)
  • Skill with mechanical hand tools and machine shop experience
  • Experience with machined, cast, stamped, welded, injection molded, and sheet metal parts.
  • Expertise designing opto-mechanical assemblies and applying tolerance analysis to ensure proper fit and function
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Ability to influence others
  • Lead initiatives of moderate scope and impact
  • Ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously
  • Effective problem identification and solution skills
  • Proven analytical and organizational ability
