We are a leading consultancy in GB passenger railway franchising, an area we have been heavily involved in since 1998. We provide a range of high quality services for both public and private sector clients. This includes the specification and evaluation of franchise competitions and single-tender negotiations for the letting authority and the provision of strategic and technical support to private sector franchise bidders. We have a variety of rail projects including a growing and exciting portfolio of multi-million pound projects for both letting authorities and private sector bidders. As a result of this growth, we are seeking an additional Rail Operational Planning Consultant to join the London based Rail Planning team. We are looking for a proficient and credible railway operations individual with previous experience of working on rail planning projects, an interest in the rail industry and the drive to learn, expand areas of expertise and progress quickly.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide technical support to major projects and lead on operational planning workstreams in small to medium sized projects;
  • Prepare technical reports for public and private sector clients;
  • Provide technical supervision and guidance to staff;
  • Attend client meetings and participate in the presentation of work;
  • Pro-actively develop skills both on the job and from formal training and share knowledge with colleagues; and
  • Assist in the preparation of bids and marketing.

Essential requirements for this role:

  • A thorough practical understanding of rail industry operational planning techniques including a detailed knowledge of at least two of timetable planning, rolling stock diagramming, train crew diagramming, train crew rostering and performance simulation;
  • Previous experience of undertaking capacity assessments and analysis;
  • A sound understanding of how operational planning fits within the wider railway industry;
  • Practical experience in the use of at least two of the following rail industry operational planning packages:
- Voyagerplan;

- Railsys;

- TPS;

- Traintracs;

- Tracs-RS; and

- Open Track

  • A good overall knowledge and understanding of the GB rail network including a detailed technical knowledge of the characteristics of at least one of Network Rail's Routes;
  • Experienced user of spreadsheets;
  • Experience of producing high quality technical reports for public and/or private sector clients;
  • An ability to work effectively as part of a team and to share ideas and expertise with team members to support ongoing learning and improvement.

Desirable characteristics for this role include:

  • Membership of the Institution of Railway Operators (MIRO);
  • An appreciation of and ideally experience in running MOIRA;
  • An understanding of rail industry cost drivers;
  • An understanding of the fundamentals of track layout design along with signalling principles;
  • Experience of undertaking performance modelling;
  • Some previous experience of leading technical workstreams or managing projects with a large technical component; and
  • Some experience of providing analytical support in rail business models; including crowding, operating costs, performance and business case.
