The UK Nuclear area within Jacobs provide engineering design, construction, planning, support, survey, design-build, project management and program management for our Nuclear Industry clients. With more than fifty years of experience across the complete nuclear asset lifecycle, we support client delivery and the associated infrastructure requirements at every stage of a project.

In order to support our continued growth we require a Civil, Structural and Architectural Engineer within our (CS&A) team to be based in our Cumbrian office. The Engineer will be supporting the team on projects of varying scales and complexity, where they will assist in the production of accurate drawings that can be reviewed and approved by the engineer with little or no amendments. The successful person will become part of a respected and ambitious company with excellent career prospects and international opportunities.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Understand design calculations and develop GA's, sections, details and specifications to detailed level output from a minimum of information without supervision
  • Carry out measurement surveys on-site and produce detail drawings and layouts
  • Attend technical meetings, providing input and minutes
  • Oversee Junior members of the team and mentor/develop their core skills
  • Ensure that drawings conform to the appropriate standards and procedures


  • Minimum HNC qualified in Civil/Structural engineering or equivalent
  • Additional formal qualifications (above the minimum) would be advantageous
  • The successful candidate will have ten years or more experience in a civil and structural design role having direct influence over design practices and outcomes
  • Ability to demonstrate their capability of producing GA's, details and structural drawings
  • The candidate must be proficient in the use of the latest version of AutoCAD and associated software, with the ability to work unsupervised
  • Ability to achieve P4 pass holder status and a minimum of SC clearance is essential
  • Experience of detailing for concrete and structural steelwork is essential
  • Able to work as a team member and oversee designer grade staff in a project specific role

Desirable skill & Experience:

  • Nuclear experience is advantageous
  • Other IT skills would be a distinct advantage
  • Experience of working at or for Sellafield Ltd would be a distinct advantage
  • Leadership qualities suitable for small project teams and can provide support/guidance to others
  • Knowledge and use of BIM packages would be a distinct advantage
  • A sound appreciation of up to date manufacturing, assembly methods, workshop methods, site and construction requirements
  • Ability to have constructive dialogue with staff from all levels and discipline groups; together with liaising with client organisations
  • Awareness of applicable codes and safety legislation and how they should be applied
