Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Toxicologist located in San Ramon , CA or Houston, TX through December 31, 2016 .


The Toxicologist will be part of the Health and Workforce Safety Unit, which provides toxicology subject matter expertise to Chevron operating companies world-wide on technical projects, regulatory compliance assurance, product stewardship and occupational health. This position will primarily be in support of fuel and lubricant additives

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct chemical hazard and risk assessments in support of product development, new substance notifications to regulatory agencies, and SDSs.
  • Develop toxicology testing strategies to meet regulatory and notification requirements. Includes applying read across principles and computational toxicology tools where applicable to reduce the need for animal testing.
  • Work with Chevron Operating Companies and their customers, including product development and product stewardship groups, to recommend testing, labeling, exposure standards, and other product stewardship measures.
  • Oversight of toxicology testing at contract research laboratories and interpretation of the results.
  • Participate on industry-wide trade associations, technical workgroups, and regulatory/scientific advocacy committees to address toxicology, product stewardship, risk assessment and/or exposure assessment issues of interest to Chevron.
  • May provide litigation support for personal injury or product liability issues
  • Monitor and review technical literature and databases for new scientific information and data on petroleum-based materials and products
  • Serves as a member of the Chevron Emergency Information Center, being on-call on rotation periodically during off-hours. Provides health, safety and environmental information on products or other chemicals to customers and other callers, including physicians and emergency response personnel
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Toxicology or related field of study and 2+ years of experience demonstrating knowledge of core competencies OR PhD in Toxicology.
  • Eligible to be a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (DABT).
  • Demonstrated experience and/or expertise with: conducting toxicology evaluations for chemicals and chemical categories (e.g., read across); preparing chemical safety assessments (CSAs) for REACH registrations; interacting with regulatory agencies; clearly communicating complex toxicology issues to business partners; experience with chemical control regulations; toxicology testing required for regulatory notification; using alternative testing methods, including computational toxicology and in vitro testing methods.
  • Demonstrated experience as a team player and working successfully on cross-functional teams.
  • Can lead technical teams to accomplish goals in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills; seeks to understand customer requirements and expectations; communicates effectively with technical and non-technical personnel orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in chemistry especially as it relates to conducting toxicology evaluations.
  • Capable of interpreting scientific data and regulatory guidance as it relates to potential business impacts.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Toxicology or related field of study and 3+ years of experience demonstrating knowledge of core competencies.
  • DABT certification preferred.
Travel may be required in the U.S. and internationally
Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.
