Our HVAC/Building Services group in the Park Square office, Manchester is part of the Petroleum and Chemicals (P & C) line of business in the UK and also supports the Life Sciences line of business. The role reports to the Manager of Mechanical Engineering.

We currently have an opportunity for a Principal HVAC/Building Services Engineer within our P & C team based in Manchester. This role reports to the Manager of Mechanical Engineering. The Principal Engineer is responsible for leadership of HVAC/Building Services design teams in the concept, front end and detailed design stages of projects. The role includes the hands-on supervision of design teams, defining work-hour budgets, the specification of HVAC design philosophies, scopes of work, material & equipment specifications, requisitions and data sheets, schedules of material etc. They should be capable of carrying out detailed psychrometric analyses, fluid flow calculations, pipework and ductwork sizing, energy balance calculations, for a wide range of facilities in the pharmaceutical, biotechnical, and chemical industries.

Responsibilities as a Principal Engineer include:

  • Providing Technical Expertise in HVAC
  • Capable of undertaking Detailed HVAC Designs
  • Leading and managing design teams when required
  • Interface working with the other disciplines on both project and line management activities
  • Initiating and leading Workshare with our Indian offices on projects as required. This includes visiting India as appropriate and maintaining contact with key personnel.
  • Initiating and leading 3D model techniques and tools with support, to ensure all projects maximise efficient and effective multi discipline delivery.
  • Assisting with personnel appraisals and the development of staff
  • Development and maintenance of technical standards.
  • Responsible for assessing workhours for proposals including assessment of workshare.
  • Participating in decisions regarding the execution of Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and/or Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPCm) contracts.
  • Production of concepts and early designs in a cost-efficient and appropriate manner.
  • Develop discipline programme for manpower and delivery.
  • Ensuring that project progress is managed and earned value principals used and are timely and accurate
  • Supporting and assisting HoD as required

Proposal work will include:

  • Development of methodologies and strategies for project delivery.
  • Establishment of deliverables lists and workshare agreements.
  • Work-hour estimates.
  • Preparing and delivering Technical presentations as appropriate.

Project work will include:

  • Engineering support to the schedule, including planning interactions.
  • Work-hour tracking and performance.
  • Progress measurement (earned value).
  • Leading design teams to be effective, efficient and communicative.
  • Ensuring technical excellence in delivery, with excellent discipline integration and information flow.
  • Reviewing designs for compliance both formally and informally.
  • Approval of key documents as defined in company standards and Project Quality Plan.

Assisting the Head of Department in:

  • Developing relationships with other offices to identify work opportunities.
  • Liaising with other Jacobs offices to establish common working methods and the support of best practices
  • Defining the development and training needs for the discipline and for graduate development.
  • Interviewing new hires, mentoring and developing staff in the department.
  • Maintaining up to date knowledge of international codes and standards and European Directives


  • A proven track record of HVAC Design for the Pharmaceutical Industry including API / Secondary / Bio-Tech.
  • Shall also have a good working knowledge of the cGMP Orange Guide and BS-EN-ISO-14644.
  • Experience of Industrial HVAC Designs in particular for Hazardous Areas, LEV Systems etc,
  • Proven experience in a discipline leadership role working within the HVAC / Building Services discipline of an organisation.
  • Working experience with projects controls in particular scheduling, work-hour control, productivity and status reporting.
  • Experience of project execution in all stages from Concept to Commissioning.
  • Excellent understanding for safety in design.
  • To be able to work to Company standard operating procedures but to be innovative when appropriate.


  • Minimum: B Eng (Hons)
  • Preferred: M Eng (Hons)

Institute or Associated bodies:

  • Minimum: Associate CIBSE or I Mech E
  • Preferred: Chartered Engineer CIBSE or I Mech E


Projects are both UK based and International and therefore travel to Client offices and Sites will be undertaken to support the activity. On occasion this may mean assignments in the UK or overseas.
