Jacobs has an exciting opportunity for a new Structural Designer IV located in our Greenville, SC office.

Position Summary

In this role, the Structural Designer will work closely under the direction of the Lead Structural Engineer. This role is responsible for preparing detailed construction drawings for steel and reinforced concrete structures using structural specifications, engineering calculations, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures.

This position requires coordination with other discipline designers such as mechanical, electrical, piping and project team members to ensure a complete and timely production of drawing packages, spreadsheets, and databases to document information related to design. The designer will become familiar with work processes for the Office and the Department.

Position Responsibilities
  • The Structural Designer will work on a variety of projects pertaining to industrial clients ranging from plant modifications to new facilities.
  • All work will be performed under the general supervision of the Lead Engineer and Department Manager.
  • The Structural Designer will work alongside the Lead Structural Engineer to perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks. Design will be prepared using Office and Department standards and procedures.
  • The Structural Designer will become familiar with project scopes, specifications and design criteria when assigned to a project team. He or she must participate in design reviews with other disciplines to evaluate design concepts and make recommendations.
  • The Structural Designer must be receptive to directions in the preparation of acceptable technical solutions. The Structural Designer must interact well with other disciplines in order to complete tasks.
  • The Structural Designer will review vendor submittals and equipment drawings and incorporate design information.
  • The Structural Designer will be responsible for acquisition and presentation of field data.
  • The Structural Designer must be a self-starter who willingly accepts and seeks challenging responsibilities and takes ownership of results and performance.
  • The Structural Designer in this senior role is expected to mentor and help develop less experienced staff.
  • The Structural Designer must meet Office work schedule with regular and reliable attendance.
  • The Structural Designer will work alongside engineers to develop conceptual layouts for cost studies as necessary to determine the simplest and most cost effective designs for clients.
  • The Structural Designer will be expected to travel to job sites, client offices or other Jacob's offices to perform their duties as required.
  • The Structural Designer will be expected to perform all work to the best of their ability in an efficient manner without unnecessary errors.
  • The Structural Designer is expected to be able to work independently with only minimal oversight to produce quality deliverables on schedule and budget.
  • The Structural Designer will check the accuracy and quality of drawings developed by drafters, when assigned, based on information conveyed by engineering calculations, equipment and discipline drawings, governing design codes, project (or Company) specifications, and good engineering practice.
  • The Structural Designer will assist the lead engineer with engineering estimates, forecasting of drawing status, project planning and organizing and maintaining files for the project.
  • The Structural Designer will perform other duties as required.

  • The Structural Designer must have a minimum 10 years' of relevant experience in drafting/design of steel and reinforced concrete.
  • The Structural Designer must have 2 years technical school education with CAD and structural drafting/design or equivalent or Associate's Degree in Drafting required.
  • The Structural Designer must have solid conceptual and design process skills and good problem solving ability.
  • The Structural Designer must have the a bility to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • The Structural Designer must have the a bility to consistently meet deadlines, completing tasks as previously defined.
  • The Structural Designer must be proficient in the use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Mail.
  • The Structural Designer must have a working knowledge of CAD software such as AutoCad or Microstation, or both.
  • 3D modeling skills are required (e.g. Frameworks and PDS).
  • SmartPlant 3D experience is preferred but not required.
  • The Structural Designer must have good listening, writing and communication skills.
  • Working within client facilities and at times within sister offices may be required. As such the Structural Designer will be expected to travel to job sites, client offices or other Jacob's offices to perform their duties as necessary.
