The Senior Combustion Thermo - Acoustics Design (Dynamics) Engineer will develop innovative solutions and advance GE gas turbine combustion technology through combustion instability modeling, testing and data interpretation. This person will mentor engineers with expertise in combustion instability to develop innovative solutions using in - house and commercial software.

Essential Responsibilities

The Senior Combustion Thermo - Acoustic Design Engineer will work closely with cross - functional teams and business leaders to advance combustion technology in a rapid pace environment. This expert will plan and execute projects to best meet product development requirements. The role will include demonstrating accountability for functional, business and broad company objectives in the field of combustion instability and work with leaders across GE to set strategy and leverage best practices. The role includes mentoring of best methods, preparing for design reviews and documenting results that demonstrate productivity and technical excellence.
In addition, you will:
  • Develop & deliver state - of - the - art NPI design solutions to improve the combustor aero performance and durability using combustion instability modeling and test methods
  • Execute the design, analysis and validation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements
  • Drive delivery of multiple concurrent high quality NPI programs to accomplish technical performance deliverables, documentation and schedule objectives
  • Contribute to defining a road map for computational advancements and leverage university research, software developers and global GE design community such as Global Research Center (GRC) for execution
  • Advance the state - of - the - art in Combustion Dynamics in computational, signal processing, data analysis, test methods and modeling
  • Work with the Advanced Design Tools team to develop and apply new tools
  • Plan, execute and interpret results of sub - scale, large scale combustion and gas turbine tests to obtain impedance and flame transfer functions and to validate computer simulations
  • Present combustion aero - acoustics results to multiple levels of management during program technical reviews and at GE combustion symposiums


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science with specialization in combustion dynamics
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in industrial applications of gas turbine or IC engine engineering

Desired Characteristics

  • Master's Degree in Engineering or Business
  • Six Sigma Green Belt / Black Belt Certification or equivalent Quality certification (GE Employees only)
  • Possess strong communication skills, including the ability to give persuasive presentations. In this role, you should have ability to respond well to questions and analyze complex requirements
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, leadership, facilitation and problem solving skills
  • Customer focused with ability to develop & interpret requirements
  • Must be able to work to tight deadlines with multiple priorities
  • Experience in performing combustion modeling using 1D and 3D tools such as Chemkin, Fluent and ICEM
  • Experience in analytical modeling of fluid dynamic and combustion phenomena using singular and regular perturbation methods, including high-activation energy asymptotics
  • Experience in development of in-house computational codes (Euler Solver using FVM and FEM, Level Set solvers, VOF solver, Equilibrium Calculator using Partition functions etc.) on UNIX based platforms using C / C++ and / or Matlab
  • Experience in development of numerical schemes and methods to achieve high-order accuracy
  • Familiarity with optimization and DOE techniques
  • Experience in reliability and risk analysis, and exposure to data mining
  • Experience / expertise to experimental methods and data / signal processing
  • Exposure to six sigma quality culture
  • Demonstrated experience in technical documentation and writing publications, conference papers and project reports
  • Laboratory and field testing experience of combustion systems in large industrial gas turbines
  • Familiarity with Gas Turbine Combustion Systems including natural gas, IGCC, syngas and liquid fuel combustion systems and operability
  • Strong computer skills using heat transfer, thermo-acoustics tools and CFD
