Jacobs is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our Design and Sampling team in support of our Research Laboratory Support (RLS) contract with the U.S. EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) - Air Pollution Prevention and Control Division (APPCD) located in Research Triangle Park, NC. The ideal candidate will have professional skills and specialized academic training in a technical field which will be used and will lead to considerable amount of independent, self-managed work. The ideal candidate's duties will also develop into the management of tasks and possibly projects.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Responsibility for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex research facilities and associated sampling equipment.
  • Operating sampling probes installing and operating environmental test equipment and collecting data such as gas emissions, flow rates and temperatures.
  • Responsibility for maintaining and operating a number of real-time environmental instruments that will require daily attention and periodic maintenance and calibrations.
  • Originate and/or amend written standard operating procedures, quality assurance plans, and work plans as related to air emissions research tasks.
  • Maintain hard-copy and electronic records of measurement results and reports in accordance with Jacobs Technology and EPA records management protocols.
  • Perform all laboratory work accordance with established Jacobs and EPA safety and quality assurance protocols.

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks - 100% of time

  • Pilot-Scale Combustors
  • Passenger vehicles, fork lifts, man-lifts
  • Source emission monitors: UV, IR, GFC-Chemiluminescent
  • Supervisory and Control Data Acquisition systems 9SCADA)
  • CAD drawing softward
  • Various devices for the measurement of gas flow rates, temperature and pressure
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products

Criticality of Attendance - 100% of the time

  • Regular days
  • Regular attendance necessary
  • Primarily 8+ hour work days with core working hours 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Other Essential Functions:

  • Must pass a drug screen and background check

Skills required: Excellent mechanical skills, ability to diagnose and repair complex electro-mechanical systems

Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally the results of research experiments to Jacobs Technology and EPA personnel.

A valid driver's license and clean driving record is required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Years of experience: 4

Skills preferred: Commercial stack sampling experience; experience operating combustion equipment and instrumentation or continuous emission monitors; experience with electronic (emission or diagnostic) analyzers; knowledge of combustion processes including coal, natural gas, and fuel oil; knowledge of flame safety systems; proficient in Microsoft Excel; other examples of strong mechanical diagnostic skills will be viewed favorably in this candidate.
