Industrial Painter/Surface Treatment

Vestas Towers Americas, Inc.

Department Description
The Surface Treatment department consists of several different processes that treat and prepare the "raw steel" section so that it can be coated by a high quality polyurethane paint. These preparation processes ensure that the coating will adhere to the steel correctly and provide optimal performance and maintain structural integrity throughout the recommended life of the product. The Surface Treatment department is capable of treating 3600 sections (or 1200 complete towers) per year.

The first process in Surface Treatment is the wash process. In this step, a mild detergent and pressurized water are used to clean the interior and exterior of all contaminants that are added in by the welding process as well as any environmental contaminants. Next is the TAP and blast operations. The Turnkey Abrasive Profiler (TAP) is a machine that blasts the outside diameter of the section and removes all rust and any remaining contamination after the wash process as well as gives it a rough surface, or profile, that will allow the paint to adhere to the steel. The blast process is the exactly the same except on the inside diameter and done manually with operators and a blast hose. Metalizing is the third process in Surface Treatment. Certain areas of the section are coated with zinc to ensure that these areas have the appropriate tensile strength and also so that these areas are conductive as needed. Paint is the last process in Surface Treatment. In this process the section is cleaned and prepped prior to applying two different coatings - an epoxy and a polyurethane. Both the inside and outside gets coated with epoxy it is allowed to cure and then topcoat is applied to both the inside and outside. It is checked for appropriate film thickness and defects before it is approved and allowed to move on.
